why is ghandi revered as a ‘Truly Radical Change Agent’

Mahatma Ghandi, born October 2nd, 1869, was seen as a truly radical person because he used his political and social activism to help his country and become the national movement leader against the British rule of India. He was seen as truly radical because of his beliefs and persuasion to get an entire nation to confront their British rulers without using violence but using his political knowledge to his peaceful advantage. Ghandi is internationally esteemed for his way of nonviolent protests, called satyagraha, to achieve the political and social progress he strived to create. In one of Ghandi's first campaigns, he sought to get more rights for Indian's living in South Africa by starting up a campaign against the legislation that put a barrier between Indian's and their right to vote. His campaign got international attention, and after seven years of political struggle, it paid off as he was able to negotiate a compromise agreement with the South African government.

How has ghandi's work encouraged a more open-minded view on situations rather than a close-minded and controlled view?

Ghandi has created an open-minded way of viewing and living your life through his teachings and the experiences that people were about to live with him, and by learning from him. he encouraged open-mindedness and a self-motivated train of thought. Ghandi was a firm believer in accepting others for who they are and what they are. Many of Ghandi’s speeches talk about open-mindedness and how people can strive to achieve it. His speeches have taught people about many things, and people continue to learn and create their open-minded view of situations rather than their previous closed-minded views.

How did ghandi challenge the ‘status quo’, rather than holding onto power through violence?

Ghandi challenged the status quo by first challenging against the Transvaal government. He fought against the government that was ruling India and fought them not with weapons but with using political and social knowledge. At the start of Ghandi's uprising, the government published a humiliating ordinance for the registration of the Indian population. This angered the Indians, and their pass protested, and with Ghandi's leadership, took a pledge to defy the ordinance if it became law. The struggle in South Africa lasted more than seven years and had its ups and downs as no violence was being committed. Ghandi fought for their independence and, after those years, eventually won India its independence.

How did ghandi take risks for the wellbeing of others rather than risking others’ wellbeing?

Ghandi took risks to create a safer environment and for the wellbeing of others through his nonviolent protests. One of the results of his protests was him getting arrested and going to jail for some time. This protest took place on March 12th, 1930. Ghandi led a group. Of Indians down to the beach where a natural collection of crystalline salt-forming and planned to collect it. Unfortunately, the British government had found out about his protest and had trampled the salt into the mud so they couldn’t collect it. On that day, Ghandi pulled a block from out the mud and held it high for everyone to see. This action got him arrested for civil disobedience, but his uprising continued even while he was in jail and continued when he was released a year later

How has ghandi worked for transformation of a situation rather than controlling and demanding conformity?

Ghandi believed that self-transformation was just as important as a transformation of a community. he writes “We do see constantly men becoming better under effort and discipline. There is no occasion for limiting the capacity for improvement.” Although self-transformation was very important in Ghandi's teachings and way of life, he used law, wisdom and his religious views to achieve transformation wherever he could. for example, he used his political knowledge to sway the British government to leave India and allow them to claim independence over their own country. Ghandi’s teachings inspired millions of people to rise up and he transformed their way of life and mentality towards their own country to help create a better life for everyone he could.

When studying Ghandi and looking into his teachings and beliefs, I have learnt so much about how he changed so many people's lives and helped create a better way of living for them. His whole experience and time of the earth that he spent using his knowledge and sharing it, inspires me so much. I have found his way of self-transformation and the idea that transformation starts with you very interesting to learn about and it has made me think about my world view and how I perceive things. Diving deep into Ghandi’s way of life has definitely changed my world view because he beliefs were so different from mine in some ways, and I feel like I've learnt a lot from him and how I change maybe change the way I perceive certain things

Recently people have gone over and revaluated Ghandi’s work and believe to have found evidence of Ghandi being a racist to Africans and people of colour. Ghandi worked in African for many years and two south African academics, Ashwin Desai and Goolam Vahed, spent seven years exploring Ghandi’s life and his pieces of work. In the book ‘The South African Gandhi: Stretcher-Bearer of Empire’, Desai and Vahed write that during his stay in Africa, Gandhi kept the Indian struggle, quote, "separate from that of Africans and coloureds even though the latter were also denied political rights on the basis of colour and could also lay claim to being British subjects"
