Soar high school and AVC have their own expectations that should be followed. There are rules and behaviors that are expected for students to follow and surpass. Classes should be attended, and if not communicated, but either way there is a certain amount of tardies and abscesses that can affect you. There will be challenges and bumps but overall you should be able to succeed and do well in school. There is always help and someone to talk to on campus and you can always ask questions/talk to someone. Soar students should have good practices and be well behaved. Your grades should be important and well thought about because having low grades means you shouldn't be here and can affect you. We have resources and can be helped. We should be responsible for our own selves and be prepared to be here. Students are limited to one academic class (hd or lb). We should learn how to learn and be successful. We should use our free time to get things done and be responsible for our work and classes.

What happens if you get lower than a C? For College: Retake class and buy textbooks. For High school: Retake class in summer and will be placed in MAS.

Mandatory Academic support (MAS) is something you only have to take if you get a D or F in any class. If you do get placed in MAS you are there for an entire semester.

Being a STAR student:

S - Self Advocate

T - Teachable

A - Accountable

R - Respectful

Attendance: Excused absences don't work when it comes to college. You need to show up on time every day for both high school and college, or at least let them know beforehand if you are aware that you are going to be late.

Behaviour: There are behaviour guidelines that you are expected to follow, for both AVC's code of conduct and SOAR's guidelines towards behaviour. Follow them and you don't have to worry about anything.

Grades: C's or higher is the academic expectation for all high school and AVC courses. Even if you have difficulty or challenges, the students at SOAR are expected to reach out for help on their own. If you were to get a D or an F in high school, you have to retake the course in summer school. If you were to get a D or an F in college, you must take the course in the next course or in summer school and you might have to pay for the textbook that is used in the class. It's a standard for both college and highschool here at SOAR that if you were to get a D or an F, you'd have to be placed in Mandatory Academic Support(MAS).

Being placed in MAS means that you had a D or an F in any class from a previous semester or that you are earning a D or an F at the first quarterly grade report. You would be asked to leave the Soar program if you don't do anything to help yourself get better.

AVC Registration: You must take 1 AVC course in the fall and spring, and summer courses are NOT mandatory. Your AVC classes cannot conflict with your highschool classes, meaning that you can't have an avc class that ends at 11:50 when you have a high school class that starts at 11:30. They will prioritize high school first, so you would have to drop that college course for a different one that benefits your schedule.

AVC Textbooks: Return your textbook if you get a physical by the following Monday at the end of the term. You will receive instructions through an email on how to return the books and will receive a fine for returning it less than a week late of more than a week late.

California Promise Grant: Something you complete once a year, usually during the summer.

Always carry your AVC ID while conducting "college business".

AVC's Student Health Fee along with the Student Representation fee must be paid every term to enroll in AVC courses.

The biggest thing is earning your high school diploma! You have to get 230 credits by the end of your senior year in order to get your diploma, 10 high school credits being given out for each year of a class that you took. You can end up getting more than the minimum recommendation of credits by taking a relative course in college.

2. Complete your A-G Requirements! It's a list of requirements that include history, English, math, Lab. Science, For. Language, Vis. and Preforming Arts, and College Prep Elected. Foreign Language and Vis. and Preforming Arts are not being offered at SOAR and you will have to take the course at AVC. When it comes to Language, it's recommended to take 2 years of the same language. All classes require C's or better in order to be considered passing, but again, the higher the better! Each AVC course that you take and complete are considered to be equivalent to 1 year of highschool, giving you the credits to whatever category it may fall into.

It is not required to get your AA degree, it is completely optional and is not needed whatsoever in order to get into a four year college. Some might not want to finish their Cal-GETC and that's completely okay as well. It can be overwhelming and that's fine if that is the reason as to why you may not want to get your AA.

Over the first semester of this school year, you'd be looking at colleges, review your ed plan, and you would be registering for spring. Over the second semester

Students are expected to follow the SOAR motto: STAR (S - Self Advocate, T - Teachable, A - Accountable, R - Respectful)

Expectations: Attendance is a top priority, as it is important to show up and come on time to all your classes (This goes for SOAR and AVC).

Academics: Earn C's or better in all classes for high school and college courses.

D and F's as a final grade in college will require you to retake the course during the next semester or summer. Textbook for that class will need to be paid for.

For high school, the course will need to be retaken during the summer as well.

The chances of being placed in MAS (Mandatory Academic Support) are likely with grades of D's or F's. This program requires you to fulfill requirements for a whole semester. Showing no signs of improvement after the semester can equal getting kicked out of SOAR.

AVC Registration: 1 AVC course in Fall and Spring

AVC courses can't conflict with high school classes.

Limited to AVC courses on the IGETC or AVC Ed Plan.

Grade level guidelines must be followed.

AVC Textbooks: AVC Textbooks borrowed must be returned by Monday following end of term. $25 dollar fine per class if returned less than a week late. More than that results in full cost of each book late.

Each year the California Promise Grant must be submitted.

In order to graduate, you need 230 credits total. If you have up to 3 absences in a college class, your professor can drop you from their class. You have to have at least a C or better as a final grade in AVC and SOAR classes. If your final grade results as a D or F you must retake that class. AVC textbooks must be returned within a week of the end of the term. Failure to do so results in a $25 fee. To continue in the SOAR program, you are required to submit the CA promise grant annually. All students are expected to represent the rules in the SOAR student handbook and the AVC code of conduct. Students are also expected to carry their AVC ID with them at all times.
