Every poem requires at least one of the basic elements of poetry. The elements of poetry are: rhyme, rhythm, repetition, and figurative language. There are so many types of poetry. For example, limerick, diamond, free verse, haiku, and acrostic. A poem consists of stanzas. Stanzas are like a paragraph in an essay, but in a poem. Quartets are the most common type of stanzas. This is because they are easy to rhyme with. Couplets are stanzas with 3 lines. Similarly tercets are stanzas with 3 lines. The same goes with cinquains and sextets.

A poet is a person who writes poems. There are many famous poets. Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein are famous childrens' poets.
Should schools allow candy as rewards?

By: David

My opinion is that schools should allow candy as incentives because it gets kids to contribute more to their class, they get more motivated and engaged in their class, and the students are much happier.

One reason candy should be allowed as an incentive is because it gets kids to contribute more to their class. For example, would you voluntarily clean your classrooms or do an assignment? The National Association of School Psychologists suggest that the reward system helps motivate students to complete their homework “It’s rather shocking that without rewards students don’t complete it.”

Another reason candy should be an incentive is that it gets children more engaged and motivated during class. If I was rewarded candy for paying attention.I totally I will totally pay attention. Candy or treats can be used for a multitude of reasons when it comes to motivating behavior change , or simply to help persuade our child to achieve a desired outcome.

Lastly they get more happy. Candy can improve your day if you're having a bad day. Not only does it make you happy, it is also tasty. Sweet factory global said “Eating sweets quickly goes from the stomach to the bloodstream and then to the brain, where it causes a surge in dopamine. Dopamine is the hormone that causes feelings of happiness, excitement, and joy. It's one of the same hormones released after exercise or when you're enjoying time with someone you love.”

There are thousands of benefits with candy in our classroom. Candy gets kids to contribute more to their class, they get more motivated and engaged in their class, and the students are much happier. That’s why schools should allow candy as incentives. Do you want unhappy students? The choice is yours.

Should schools allow candy as rewards?

By: Alex

I believe that schools should not allow candy as incentives because it’s not healthy, it can disturb student behavior, and because some kids can’t eat candy.

One reason schools should not allow candy as an incentive is because it is not healthy. For example, candy can lead to obesity if you eat it every day. Also it can give students diabetes, cavities, and more. “Treats as rewards encourage overeating of unhealthy food. Food rewards are usually high in sugar, salt and fat, which is unhealthy.” a nutritionist, Leatta Byrd, stated. Candy gives students sugar rushes, causing them to be hyper for a while, when it crashes making them tired and unable to learn. In addition candy offers little vitamins, minerals, and protein.

Another reason why candy should not be kept in schools is that it disturbs student behavior. For example, one student can act good only in front of the teacher who gives him candy. “Students need a nutritious meal to get through an afternoon of classes.” Kathleen Modenbach, a classroom teacher, quotes. Some students get jealous of other students who get candy. Students will start to expect the candy coming for them, and if they do not they will start to complain. In addition to that, students may start to dislike any teachers who dislike teachers who don’t give them candy. Eating sugar releases a chemical called dopamine in their brain. Dopamine is the “reward center” of your brain, leading you to want more candy or sugar.

My last reason why candy should not be kept in school is because some kids cannot eat candy. For example, if a student has braces then they cannot eat candy. “I don’t think it’s fair to reward some kids with candy and not others because of an allergy or because they do not approve. Rewards should be intrinsic, not extrinsic.” quoted Mrs. Michelle Detamazo, a 5th grade English teacher. Teachers can also give other prizes other than candy; such as stickers, pencils, and other things that students like. In addition, many students' parents don’t allow them to eat candy.

This is why candy should be banned. Candy can cause many bad things. Please stop using candy as a reward. As it might encourage students, it will cause harm in the long-run.

Act now when you can!

By: Olivia

Did you know the meteorite that wiped-out dinosaurs struck Mexico? Yup, it shocked me too! There are many different cool facts about Mexico like how Mexico is a big time coke and cola consumer! 😆 Another cool fact is that Mexico was my favorite trip! There are many reasons why Mexico is my favorite trip but my top three reasons are definitely the hotel, the outdoor activities, and my family and friends.

The hotel had so many cool features like the coolest indoor waterfall. The hotel had so many comfy yet mesmerizing places to chill and read a book. The best part was that the beautiful ocean was right next to the hotel. Imagine walking out of the hotel and finding yourself on the sandy beach and cool breezes waving your way. Would you believe that the hotel also had one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to! They had so many different varieties of food. We would go to a different restaurant every night. That was an amazing way to conclude my day.

Kids need a break after a long school day! Isn’t it the best feeling going to a nice hotel and relaxing by the pool and on the beach with your family and friends . For me it is! Not only would I go to the beach and pool every day, you could also go ziplining and along with that swimming in the most amazing caves in the world. Would you believe me if I said I did more. Well, I sure did do more .. I went snorkeling in the beautiful clear ocean water and in a lake where I discovered turtles and stingrays. We also went to an ancient city with cool pyramids. Even though it was hot and humid, I still learned a lot. Did you know Mexico is home to the largest pyramid in the world. I got to go on so many different tours each unique in their own way. That's why the outdoors was such a great part of my vacation.

There is only one thing that will give you everlasting happiness… your family and lets not forget your friends. One of the main reasons why Mexico was my favorite trip is my friends and family. They always light me up when I’m feeling down. Let's be honest, would you rather go on vacation alone or with your family and friends.

Definitely with your family and friends. We have to remember to thank our family for treating us so well and giving us all these opportunities. One of them is studying at these schools. Lets thank our friends for including us in everything and always being there for us.

And that's why Mexico was my favorite trip ever. Now have I convinced you to go to Mexico? I sure hope so!

There are no rules. I know I talked a whole lot on rules, but free-verses don't include any. Free verse is also the loosest type of poetry. Take this for example.

On the April fools,

we did some pranks.

What did we do?

We rick-rolled our teachers,

made them click on links.

We changed the alarm

and scared the teacher.

It was a blast.

See? There was no rhyme, there was little rhythm and barely any figurative language. It does not need to be true! Many poets like free-verses because there's barely no rules.

By Ria

Do you think school is a little hard right now? Well, I interviewed Ms. Ha and she said there are going to be a bunch of fun activities. Now let me tell you some of them throughout May and June.

I have a lot to tell you so let's get started. First we had the Chinese Spelling Bee that just passed. Students competed in serious rounds of writing Chinese characters, and not only did they have to write the character, they also had to do the correct stroke. It's not so easy, is it? The grades who were competing were from kindergarten to 5th grade. We also have a field trip in Crystal Cove that just passed. And the whole school came too from kindergarten to 5th grade.

Now let me tell you some other activities they are, family day and steam. Family day and steam day just passed . Family day was a day when your family got to come to your class. How cool is that! I have never seen a school with their family's coming so early and late!

Another event coming up will be super exciting. I am sure you are so excited about STEAM day! Some of you are probably wondering what STEAM means. STEAM means, science for s,technology for t,engineering for e, art for a,and math for m. And let’s talk about some of the activities we will see on STEAM day. K through 5 will do a math maze, and also some activities like, egg drop with Ms. Michelle, solar fan with Cai lao shi and building a straw roller coaster with Maestra Cristina.

Last, let's talk about field day. Field Day is June 2. Ms. Ha says we are going to play dodgeball, islands, swamp ball and a bunch of other fun games. I heard that we are also going to have shaved ice! How cool is that!

In conclusion, I hope you had so much fun doing these activities, and you really enjoyed it. I hope you all have an awesome and wonderful summer break. We will have more activities next year!

Should schools allow candy as rewards?

By: Olivia

I believe that schools should not allow candy as incentives because it can lead to addiction, it can lead to eating disorders, and because candy is full of sugar and fat.

One reason is that it can lead to addiction. For example, if a student has one piece of candy everyday, they would be addicted by the end of the month. You might be wondering, “Huh, what makes it so addictive?” Well, sugar releases dopamine in your body, which is why most people enjoy eating sweets. In addition, researchers from New Hall Hospital discovered that sugar is more addictive than drugs such as cocaine! It’s so bad that many other people are trying to spread the idea that sugar is addictive and horrible for you such as multi bestselling author Karen Salmansohn. “Sugar is the sociopath of foods. It acts sweet, but it’s really poison," she stated.

My second reason is that eating too much candy can lead to eating disorders. For example, obesity. “The effects of added sugar intake are higher blood pressure, inflammation, weight gain, diabetes, and fatty liver disease. These are all linked to an increased risk for heart attack and stroke,” Dr. Hu from Harvard Medical School stated. Well, candy and chocolate contain added sugars. Many candy companies add lots of sugar to their products. For example, the chocolate company, HERSHEY. HERSHEY makes hundreds of millions of bars each year! Many people love their chocolate bars and gobble on them every day. Well, did you know that if you eat one ounce of chocolate everyday, you could gain at least 16 pounds in a year!

My last reason is because candy is full of sugar and fat. For example, consuming too much sugar can lead to hypertension. This can lead to headaches, pain throughout the body, difficulty breathing, anxiety, abnormal heart rhythm,, ect…consuming too much sugar and fat not only can lead to hypertension, it can also lead to cavities. Frequent snacking on sugary snacks, is the number #1 cause of cavities. It's because of the sugar in candy. Bacteria feed on the leftover sugar on your teeth which makes acids that can eat away tooth enamel which protects your teeth. There is still a way to protect your teeth from the sugar. Flossing. Flossing everyday can reduce the risk of cavities, so make sure if you snack on a candy bar, make sure to floss and brush your teeth immediately after. “You don’t have to floss all your teeth…just the ones you want to keep!” -Hometown Dental stated.

In conclusion, I believe that schools should not allow candy as incentives because it can lead to addiction, it can lead to eating disorders, and because candy is full of sugar and fat.

In addition, there are many other yummy non-sugar snacks such as energy bars, hummus, gourmet microwave popcorn, baked tortilla chips, roasted chickpeas, and avocado toast.
