Dallas Chamber Orchestra

The Dallas Chamber Orchestra has a good balance of works from Shostakovich to freshly written symphonies from composers in residence. This is great because the music does not focus on the typical cannon of the past and allows new composers to step into the light with their own style of music. They also play popular Disney songs to reach younger audiences. It does not accommodate older, less popular, composers. Their repertoire also doesn't look for a more diverse range of works from different ethnic groups. The symphony has interesting ideas and concerts, but it falls short in showing less popular and diverse music from the past. I want to see the symphony stray from the normal classical music into more jazz and loose music. It is a different way of playing, and I would love to hear how the best classical musicians in the world would play something from Miles Davis's music such as All Blues. Personally I do enjoy pieces from Shostakovich because they are dark and dry feeling. It makes me feel like I would in a dark alley or right before a terrifying moment. I can place myself in a story of my own imagining purely from his dreary notes. Dallas is decent at changing the norm of canon, but they still cling to classical music overall.

The New York Philharmonic works hard to diversify their works with classics like Beethovens fifth symphony and Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for Four Wind to a concert dedicated to Star Wars. They also have composers in residence conducting their own music. New York also manages to bring in modern music as well as diversify using Audra McDonald. New York Philharmonic has set a very good stage for using different types of music, but I still want to hear jazz music. I would love to hear their depiction of modern jazz and other works. I do enjoy their new works from a writer in residence such as Esa-Pekka's Helix which is foreboding and makes me feel nervous as well worried. It has interesting emotions that are difficult to portray, but Pekka does well with it.

"Greatness recognizes greatness, and is shadowed by it" This quote shows that works in the canon can cover up other pieces that could be considered great. It is important to diversify and play other music because of how likely we will miss something.

"Works of art make rules; rules do not make works of art." Canon defines all music that is considered art, so it is hard to stray from the norm. This makes it easy to lose other works or ignore them, and we need to make strides to stop that.
