1. "Judge, I-this note is from my sister. She says my children are missing, haven't turned up since noon. . . I . . . could you-" (Lee 276).
*This quote shows Atticus getting frustrated over the kids showing up to the court when he didn't want them to go. Atticus had Calpurnia take the kids home for dinner but agreed to let them come back once they are done eating.
2. "'You think they'll acquit him that fast?' asked Jem. Atticus opened his mouth to answer, but shut it and left us." (Lee 277).
*This quote shows the hope of the kids for Tom to come out as not guilty. This also shows that Atticus think Tom may lose because he doesn't feed off of the happiness of the children.
3. "Now don't you be so confident, Mr. Jem, I ain't ever seen any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a white man. . ." (Lee 279).
*This quote expresses that racism to a large toll on the verdict of the case. Judge Taylor had showed hints of racism through his disrespectful talks to Tom.
4. "Miss Jean Louise, stand up. Your father's passin'." (Lee 283).
*This quote shows that Atticus was having enough of the situation he had been thrown into. Atticus was frustrated that a lot of the Jury was accusing Tom of being guilty. Because of this, he had got up and packed his stuff starting on his way out; everyone stood to pay their respects.

*Atticus gets a note handed to him from his sister saying that the kids haven't been home all day. This reveals that the kids have been in the balcony of the courthouse though they weren't supposed to be there.
*Calpurnia, clearly angry, yells at the kids and threatens to "skin" them for listening to all of the nonsense.
*Aunt Alexandra was happy to find the kids since she was running around all day to find the kids. Although she was not happy to hear that Atticus said the kids could go back to the courthouse.
*While the kids were gone, their seats were saved and not much had changed. Everyone seemed to be fixated on just finding out the answer to the case.
*Reverend tells the kids that he's never seen a black man in favor. This shocked the kids but they came off as seeming to ignore it by letting it go.
*Scout explained the courtroom very still. Everyone just wanted to find the verdict of the case.
*The case had started to run very late, the case had become tedious and people were getting impatient.
*The jury had came in very oddly and avoided any sort of eye contact with Tom, since "they wouldn't look at someone that they had just convicted".
*Everyone in the room was very still and anxious as most of the jury was accusing Tom of being guilty
*Fed up with the case, Atticus said things to a few of the people in the room privately, and begun to pack his stuff up to leave the courthouse.

The importance of Chapter 21 reveals what a lot of people think about Tom. The jury and whites think he's guilty, the blacks and kids say he's innocent. Atticus claims he has done nothing wrong. This chapter shows that a lot of the jury would like to say that Tom is guilty, and that Atticus is fed up with the lack of respect towards Tom.
