My first experience with a friend who had T1D (type 1 diabetes): from managing with injections to pump

On my first day of college (in 1997!) a girl (who eventually would be a close friend) who lived in residence with me almost passed out in the monring. She mumbled she was having a "hypo". I learned that this meant low blood sugar and that she had T1D (a condition she developed when she was 10 years old, it is autoimmune and destroyed the cells of her pancreas that made insulin so now she took insulin with injections). She asked me to bring her juice from the fridge which I did, and within a few minutes she perked up. She had something else to eat and then later I walked her to class to make sure she got there safely. A few years later she changed from doing insulin injections to wearing an insulin pump. I was so impressed. This is one of the foundational experiences that motivated me to go into pediatric endocrinology. A few years later this friend told me she was getting an insulin pump--- I was intrigued. Although I only understood from a "friend perspective" at that point, my friend seemed very happy with not having to carry around insulin pens since she would just slide the pump into her pants pockets.
