Pursuit of the "American Dream"

The American Dream in The Great Gatsby is portrayed as an item that is so close to you, yet will never be achieved. Gatsby chases the green light at the end of the dock which is characterized by the author as an "orgastic future" in which Gatsby so strives to pursue. Analyzing Gatsby's motivations for the pursuit of his American Dream, Gatsby chases his past in order to relive his biggest desire; Daisy. Gatsby is also influence by socialistic pressure because in order to obtain Daisy, Gatsby goes through a history of money-making including boot-legging proving that the pressure society holds against the poor is enough to go into illegal business in order to get ahead in society. Gatsby's motives for the pursuit of the American Dream is to ultimately acquire Daisy again but fails in his quest as he is lost in chasing his past, he ruins his future.

Wealth and Class

Analyzing wealth and class in the Great Gatsby, Wealth and Class is extremely significant in the story because many characters' lives are centered around the idea of their wealth and place in society. An example of this is that Tom acquires Daisy because they are both extremely rich being born into wealth. Daisy never loved Tom, which is evident by the scene in which Daisy says she never loved Tom, and when Gatsby says she only went to Tom because she was tired of waiting for Gatsby to become rich which proves the point that all the characters are centered around wealth in order to fit in or be the top of society.

Rain/Weather

Weather appears in the Great Gatsby as a symbol of emotion or a change of mood. In the scene where Nick sets up tea with Daisy so that Gatsby can meet up with her, It rains at first before Daisy shows up. But when Daisy shows up and Gatsby starts conversing, the rain stops and it is clear with sunshine. The author's reason to interpret weather into this story is to represent an emotional symbol in which in the obvious case, rain is a status of depression, sadness, and despair. The author might have similar experiences in life when the weather correlates to the mood, or just a general application of symbolism.

The psychological point of view of Religion in the Great Gatsby speaks significance because the motives for putting religious contexts into the story is to integrate the "eyes of god" as in a god like figure that watches every action that somebody does whether it be moral or immoral. Fitzgerald wants the reader to know that the actions of the characters in the book are always being judged and they fall in two sides of justices.

The Green Light

The green light is light at the end of a dock owned by Daisy that Gatsby looks at every night. Gatsby grasps for this light that is across a void of emptiness, and although he can clearly see it and will see it every night, he will never gain his goal of getting daisy, or getting to the green light. Given Gatsby's background, he is motivated to find Daisy again, or chase his past which inevitably results in his own death in a chain of reactions. This reveals that Gatsby is in a psychological state of instability as he is constantly chasing after Daisy not realizing that it is going to lead to his death.
