While reading this book, I wondered what was physically going on in Melody's head that was preventing her from moving/talking. I know that she has cerebral palsy(168) but what physically is going on inside of her brain. Something else that I am asking myself is that do the kids around her know that she is aware of everything. I think this because the kids are really mean to her(94) so do they understand that she knows what they are saying.

There are many things in this book that I can relate to real life. A text to world connection is that people often don't treat people with disabilities like humans(22). In this book people pretend that melody isn't there and don't speak directly to her. A text to self connection I can make is that people sometimes don't understand what i'm trying to say. This happens a lot with Melody when she is trying to tell her dad she wants a happy meal but he doesn't understand(88). I feel this way when I try to get a point out and nobody understands where i'm coming from. A text to text connection that I have is between this book and Wonder. These books both have characters that have physical problems but are mentally intact.(2)

When reading this book, I have inferred lots of things. One thing that I inferred is that when Rose got her new computer, Melody would think about getting a computer to help her have a better lifestyle(124). I thought this because when I found out that Melody could not talk, my first though was why not get something to help her talk. Also, I infer that Rose is being a fake friend and she is only acting nice to look better. (118).

One scene that painted a picture in my head was when Melody says how songs remind her of colors(6). This when I was reading this scene I could had an image in my head of someone playing a saxophone with a brown tint.
Another scene that I could visualize is when they show up to the airport and find out that there flight was cancelled. Her dad goes on to punch a wall and I visualize her dads eyes watering as he shakes out his hand.(259)

Out of my Mind is about a kid (Melody) who has Cerebral Palsy which means she can't move nor talk(2). One day she decides to tryout for the Whiz Kidz team and makes it (190). There team wins the local competition so that means they get to go to Washington D.C. When Melody's family gets to the airport they realize that there flight is canceled but since the rest of the team went to breakfast together, they made it (257). The team apologizes to Melody for not inviting her and Melody forgives them(292).

Melody changes a lot through the course of Out of my Mind. One way that Melody changes is that she used to not be able to giver her opinion/speak, but since she got her Medi-Talker, she then could express her feelings(133). Another way that Melody changes is that she speaks up now. In the middle of the book, Melody said nothing when she got bullied(152). At the end of the book, Melody asks why the team left her behind(). In Out of my Mind, Melody changes a lot for the better(290).

Out of my Mind explores a very important theme. In my opinion, the author is trying to tell the reader that no matter the circumstance, you can find your voice. Throughout most of the story Melody is unable to speak, but when she finds a machine that helps her, people realize that she is smart(195). This theme is really important because many people have things preventing them from doing what they want. This themes inspires people to work hard to achieve what they want.

Out of my mind starts with Melody explaining her situation(2). She goes to a school and is in special education class. When the school makes inclusion classes, Melody gets bullied(152). Every year, there is a Whiz Kidz competition and when Melody hears about, she decides to pursue it. Melody makes the team and everyone is surprised(190). They win the first competition and get too go to Washington D.C. for the national competition. The team goes out for breakfast but because of Melody's circumstance, she was not invited. The team arrives at the airport without Melody and found out that all the flights were canceled except one which they get on. When Melody gets to the airport she finds that the team left her(258). The team finishes second and Melody forgives everyone.

In Out of my Mind, the plot is organized in a unique way. Through out the book, the reader is led to believe that the story is unfolding in real time. However at the end the reader discovers that they have been reading Melody's autobiography the whole time(294). Another style in out of my mind is that it is told from Melody's point of view. Without knowing what Melody was thinking, we would not understand what she would have to go through in her everyday life.

I enjoyed Out of my Mind because it was told from a disabled person(2). I have never heard someone with a disabilities story and it was interesting to see how hard there day to day life was. Also I think that when Melody got her talking machine and people still doubted her, I think she should have spoken up for herself. If I was in her circumstance and people were rude to me, I would have no patience. Overall, I think this book was really good and helped me understand how hard life is with a disability.
