There are so many different ways to prevent this it is impressive that it ended up like that. Juliet could of easy ran away with Romeo, because Romeo so easy got into the castle without getting caught. “ Good father, I beseech you on my knees, hear me with patience but to speak a word.” She could of just gone with Romeo at night.

For example, instead of Juliet taking the poison to make it seem like she was dead, she could have ran away to go meet Romeo somewhere. They made stupid decisions that led up to them having to depend on a plan that Friar Lawrence made for Juliet. “And I will do it without fear or doubt, to live an unstain’d wife to my sweet love.” Juliet just wanted to be with Romeo no matter what, but the decisions they had made beforehand made it very difficult for them.

Though they could not have controlled “falling in love”, they both could’ve made the most sensible actions and married others like Paris, for example. Romeo says, “Is it even so? Then I defy you, stars!” act 5, scene 1. Romeo says that he openly defies fate. He shows that all of what they had done was defying fate through their own independent actions. They chose their futures and died.
-Reese, Lauren, Braden, and Daniel

Presley, Emma, Jenna, Caleb

Shakespeare tells us that obedience, social status, and family allies were all a part of love back then. Juliet’s parents expected her to follow their every move, but when Juliet refuses to do that, her father was not happy. “Hang you, you minx! You disobedient wretch!” Capulet was very upset with Juliet not agreeing to marry Paris, and that was only one of the instances. Social statues also plays a part in who you would have gotten married to then. Family allies will also play a part in who is around you, and who are your friends. Love was very different then, and sometimes “love” then was very forced.

Through this play, Shakespeare shows us that family is not always right. Our family members are not always looking for our best interests, but sometimes, their own. Though we can be blinded by love or obedience for our families, we should be able to see past this and see who our families really are. Juliet’s parents are not looking out for her, but for their own status in their society. They do not care that she loves Romeo, they expect her to marry Paris. “An you be not, hang, beg, starve, die in the streets…” act 3, scene 5. Capulet tells Juliet that if she does not marry Paris, he will throw her to the streets to die. He treated her like an angel and cherished her until she dared to “disobey” him and beg to not marry Paris. He did not respect her or her feeling, but was only looking out for his status and how he looked to the eyes of the Prince.
-Reese, Lauren, Braden, and Daniel

As soon as Romeo saw Juliet for the first time, he was astonished. “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night”. I think in Romeo’s head he had fallen in love at first sight, but that is too fast to be “love”. He may have fallen in love with her looks, but he didn’t even know her yet. I think Romeo struggled with what he thought to be love because he didn’t know what it was actually like. Romeo and Juliet may claim to be in love, but there’s no way because they barely even knew eachother.

The feud was what was worrying them, but they should have tried talking it out with their parents. It may not have worked in their favor and their parents may not approve, but I bet that Romeo and Juliet would still be alive. All their secret plans just kept adding up and getting more difficult, which is what led to them killing themselves.

While it is undeniable that random chance had a large part in Romeo and Juliet’s demise the choices they made were what put them in a tomb. “Noise! Then I’ll be brief. What luck a dagger! This is your holder. Rest there and let me die,” (Act 5 Scene 3). Juliet even had another chance to live after her attempted suicide with Romeo’s poison. Because of Romeo’s impulse to commit suicide upon hearing of Juliet death, and Juliet with Romeo’s death they both end up being dead for completely avoidable reasons.

Carter Colberg
Ethan Peterson
Lexie Larson
Keaton Farley

Love at First Sight

Romeo’s love at first sight doesn’t seem to be genuine. He was so in love with Rosaline that he couldn’t be without her. “Now old Desire doth in his death-bed lie, And you Affection gapes to be his heir; That fair for which love groan’s for and would die; With tender Juliet match’s is now not fair,” (Act 2 Prologue). However, less than a day later he meets a girl he would marry after knowing her for less than a day. These feelings would have likely disappeared after some time.

Carter Colberg
Ethan Peterson
Lexie Larson
Keaton Farley

Family

Shakespeare tells us that family is mostly just a name. Whether it be the pointless feud between the Capulets and the Montegues, or the marriage between Romeo and Juliet. They are both willing to give up their name to be with the person that they really care about the most. “Deny thy father and refuse thy name; Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, And I’ll no longer be a Capulet,” (Act 2 Scene 2). It seems that Juliet was the only character to truly understand that their names didn’t make them any different, and that Capulet or Montegue they were all still human.

Carter Colberg
Ethan Peterson
Lexie Larson
Keaton Farley

Secrets

Throughout the play secrets cause nothing but trouble. After the first secret of the play when Romeo is married to Juliet it immediately causes the deaths of Tybalt and Mercutio. Even Romeo is banished. If everything had just been revealed Juliets marriage to Paris would have been called off, and Romeo’s banishment probably would have been lifted by the Prince. “Let not the Nurse lie with thee in chamber. Take thou this vial, being in bed, And this distilled liquor drink thou off,” (Act 4 Scene 1). The secret of the potion is the most dangerous of all as it leads to the death of Romeo and Juliet. It is only when the secret is revealed that the feud ends. If only they had told the truth earlier the heirs to Lord Montegue and Lord Capulet would still be alive.

Carter Colberg
Ethan Peterson
Lexie Larson
Keaton Farley
