Make small changes to add support and challenge.

In our classes, while teaching listening, it is possible to use our coursebooks, authentic listening materials and tasks and the ones from other sources. Using our coursebooks makes it easy to follow our curriculum while using authentic materials and tasks help our students to have the chance to be exposed to real life context. Besides, using other listening materials and tasks give us the opportunity to have a more enjoyable and more effective lesson especially when the topic is too boring for our learners to follow, and to see different kind of activities which may give us an idea while adapting later on. In short, it is better to use the combination of these three kinds of materials since each has their own advantage. To me, the point is deciding when to use which one and how to use it remembering that making small changes add tasks more support and more challenge if we want.
To tell the truth, teaching listening is sometimes a problem for me either due to the fact that I don't like the tasks or that the topic is really boring. Of course, we know that we can make adaptations but sometimes I don't have time to do it because of several reasons. Fortunately, thanks to this training, I really feel refreshed and feel like a recent graduate. Therefore, I think most of the ideas about developing more active listening skills in today's sessions would be appropriate and useful for my classes. Although I appreciate all of the ideas, I have my favorite ones. For pre-listening part, finding out what students already know about the topic and then pre-teaching key vocabulary are the best to use since they help the learners to notice that they know something about the topic and even if they don't know anything, following the pre-teaching of key vocabulary they will have some idea about the topic and they will feel less worried. When it comes to while-listening part, I prefer using re-ordering the pictures/events/sentences and correcting the sentences or completing the sentences since they will give me the chance to differentiate the task with some adaptations when I face problems related to high level students. At the third step, post-listening part , I would prefer my students work in groups to rewrite the story, create a new ending for it and adapt the dialogue by making a video as these activities will totally lead the learners to create something totally new. Besides, as they work in groups, this will support peer teaching and learning. In short, if you believe in change, you can make changes in your classes after you have made small changes in the tasks.

Improve the quality with small touches.

We, as language teachers, generally have problems related to teaching speaking; however, while some of the problems are the same in all cities, some of them show differences according to the district. In our district, the most common problem is that our students are generally afraid of making mistakes. The reasons for this are that the learners generally think that if they make a mistake while speaking, their classmates will make fun of them and as they always want to be perfect, they believe their mistake will ruin their success. Nevertheless, I have taken away some ideas and suggestions from today to cope with the problem mentioned above. The best idea is the repetition of the same task with different partners in different ways because this will improve their speaking ability more in a way that each time they speak they will realise that they can do it and that their friends can also make mistakes. In addition, letting the students get prepared for the speaking activity is another great idea from today as being prepared will give them the opportunity to reduce their mistakes and to feel more confident. Moreover, setting useful words and phrases on the board and drilling them is again a good idea to deal with the problem of being afraid of making mistakes since the students will have some clues on how they can express themselves while speaking. Furthermore, the idea that making the learners work in groups is a nice suggestion as they will not feel as if they are in the spotlight and they will feel more confident even if they make mistakes. In short, though we have learners afraid of making mistakes while speaking, it is possible to find a solution via small touches as long as we want.

Time to make an adaptation☺️

Although text 3 is an interesting one, there are still things to change. In order to arouse the learners’ interest, we can start with a video on free time activities and then ask their own hobbies. Then, as pre-reading, a question about modifying and decorating cars comes before the matching the pictures activity. For while-reading, we have T/F questions and comprehension questions, we can use them; however, we can make groups of four and in pairs in groups learners write their own questions and then they discuss the answers so as to differentiate the activity. When it comes to post-reading, the learners study with the highlighted words and create their own story with these words. As a follow-up, they can write about their own or a family member’s hobbies and make a video of it.

In our province, we generally do not have problems related to teaching reading because our learners usually like reading tasks. The challenging point in our lessons is to arouse the students’ attention. For this, using titles/pictures to predict content, writing 3 things you know and 3 things you would like to know about the topic, and trying to guess the content from the title are the activities worth trying from today’s session in my opinion. Even if there are different tasks, I am excited to use these tasks by adapting. As I said it is time to make adaptations for engaging lessons.

Process, Product, Snack or All? The web tools?

Although writing is a productive skill for learners, teaching it is sometimes ignored since it may be a bit challenging for teachers due to the fact that it requires too much work. However, using different approaches in turn can be useful for us. Using snack writing develops fluency of our students as they will feel free and will not be so much worried about their errors. Besides, product approach will be appropriate for our low level students thanks to it requires replicating a model and it improves accuracy while writing. In addition, as in process approach, it is necessary for learners to draft and redraft their writings and as it focuses on self and peer correction, this approach will both make the teachers' work easier and support collaboration among learners. In short, following different approaches in writing instruction will be advantageous for both sides in classes.
When it comes to a PDC meeting focusing writing, in my opinion, my colleagues will be most interested in the web tools from today's session in addition to the approaches to writing. Jamboard is useful for small writing tasks (snack approach) and brainstorming. Padlet paragraphs is a perfect way to develop cooperation among learners in pair / group works; besides, it enables teachers to monitor the process. As our learners are engaged in using technology, these tools will arouse their interest in writing classes; therefore, teachers will show interest in learning them.

Implicit Grammar, Implicit Vocabulary 👍🏻

Though teaching grammar can sometimes be challenging for teachers, starting the lesson with “Change Places” will be nice. Then, showing a video to introduce the topic will arouse the interest of students’. After that, drilling the language with a paper slide will be engaging for learners. All these ideas have the common point of being implicit.
When it is time to teach vocabulary, the warmers “Fly swatters / Slap the board” and “tic-toc-boom” are perfect games for learners since they make the lesson start in an enjoyable way. In addition, all the web tools we have in today’s session, will be great for teaching vocabulary because they are helpful to internalize the words. Moreover, concept check questions are helpful to see whether the meaning is clear or not. Again, what is shared by these new ideas is they help implicit teaching.
All in all, what is the most important point of today’s session is implicit teaching in my opinion. ☺️
