We have an overarching text that analyze and cover for most of the year. At the beginning of the year, I give the students 3 options and do a public vote for it. Whichever book has the most votes win. The students get very invested, and the feedback I got from them was that they liked the fact they got a choice. I also try to include literature that features interesting characters, something that can be compared to things they encounter and enjoy in their lives, i.e. anime characters and character tropes.

I motivate my students by picking a high interest book that we read as a class and discuss together. I call popcorn or let my students call popcorn which they like even better and they all take turns reading. They like picking their classmates and being in charge of the reading. We do mini projects that relate to the comprehension of what we read.

How Does a Teacher Motivate Students to read while Addressing all their Learning Needs?

Motivating students that don't like to read is one of the most difficult situations a teacher will encounter. As a primary grade teacher, the first thing I do is get the parents to reinforce the importance of reading. The next thing I do is read stories in an exciting way. In my experience, my students like the way I read more than the way stories are read on the promethean board. When I read the stories in an exciting way it encourages the students to try. The next thing is give some type of an award. Have a treasure box of items that children like and give them to students when they sincerely attempt to read. Also, go crazy like they won a championship game
when you see improvement. Show them how much it means. to you. Lastly, give them a book with a topic they like to read.

I try to keep a variety of books in the classroom and read them to students as often as I am able to. I like to do read aloud to my students using those books. I usually introduce the book by reading the title and asking questions to students to guess what the story is about based on the title and picture on the cover. By doing that I activate prior knowledge and get them interested to read. I like to read the same story twice and ask different questions to double check their comprehension of the story.
