This is never an easy situation and I always approach them with a lot of heart and thought. I have only had to fire 2 clients in the past 4 years. A situation last year where I had to fire a client was when she started leading the conversation and sending me excessive messages in between calls, while not doing the homework we agreed upon. I told her it sounds like it's not working out and gave her options, one being to refund a prorated amount for the remaining sessions. She ultimately took that option (as I hoped she would). I was gracious and refunded that amount and was glad it worked out that way.

I haven't had enough clients to fire one, yet, thank goodness! My approach so far has been to not take clients that give me "the icks" to begin with. I'm lucky enough to do this because I also have a full-time job, so I don't have to take every client that's willing to pay. I normally tell them that I want what's best for them, and I don't feel like I'm the best coach to truly help them reach their fullest potential. It's worked out well so far.

I have not had to fire anyone since corporate America, but I recently had a client that paid and never started, even after reaching out to her multiple times. I refunded her and gave her my best wishes. I am committed to using a contract now with every client so I don't walk away empty handed.

Same as Kayla & Annette, luckily I have not had to fire a client. I have had clients who were very delayed in sending over their deliverables. Since I require acceptance to the expectations contract and that contract states specifics to timelines, they must hold to that. I also am particular as to who becomes a client as well.

I had one client who had just had a baby. The baby was only a few weeks old when we started in the coaching process. She wanted to do the work, but life was way too busy for her to keep up with everything. We discussed her situation and I encouraged her to reach back out if and when she had more time. I encouraged her to take the time to focus on the new baby. She was a pro bono client and I believe that was part of the reason things did not work out. I am not sure she was committed because she did not invest in it. We ended on a positive note.
