Your elementary/middle school experience. by Knaus

Think about your time in elementary school or middle school. Take what you know about curriculum and share a memory that sticks in your head. What is something that a teacher did that impacted you, that you now have curricular understanding of. I've give you my example as this is a bit of a tricky question

We had a middle school teacher who use to rip up papers if a student didn't show their work for math. I'm now a math teacher who requires students to show work because the work demonstrates full understanding of the processes. It also helps the teacher find where and why students are making mistakes.

I would have to say that Math differentiation from Mr. Jacobs impacted not only my learning, but probably the way I taught math to a certain degree. The most advanced tasks were broken down into digestible bites and built upon. Even though in a 6th grade math classroom there were varying levels of ability he made everyone come to the realization that you could do it, regardless of your ability and always challenged those that could handle more. The relationship being built was probably the most important however.

My fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Wagner, was my favorite teacher. We did lit circles in her class and she asked us questions about the book. Back then I thought we were just talking about the book for fun because she made it so fun, but now I know she was following a curriculum. She even sometimes had her teacher book in her lap... Maybe that wasn't the best... But she'll always have a special place in my heart.

Excellent memories from all of my teachers in elementary school. I remember a lot of opportunities to showcase work. Pumpkin characters set up in the media center, book diaramas (sp?), tri-fold posters, science explorations etc. It brought a lot of my learning to a great culmination, and I still remember my projects to this day. I put a lot of time into making them the best that I could, and really enjoyed the time spent. I always loved school. :) Middle school somewhat killed my spirit...I definitely was more about my friends, and remember a lot of textbook and worksheet type of work. I do not have a lot of positive academic memories although I still succeeded in classes.

Mr. Rampp. First time I had to write. He rarely gave us topics but just write. We could write just about anything. 7th grade. I filled a notebook each quarter. This really built my writing.

Also, looking back, 4th grade music. I was nominated for a lead part in an opera. I freaked out and wanted to set design. I wish I had known I was introvert..

I have distinct memories of reading grouping by ability level. We all knew that those who were bad at reading were sitting in rows 1&2 and those who were good were in rows 5&6. We never mixed it up. I understand that students need appropriate supports in learning but maybe mixing up the groups in my 3rd grade class would have helped those struggling readers move along.

I loved experiments an learning how "things worked". I'll never forget, him or his engaging lessons.

In first grade, I had two awesome teachers. One went out of her way to find me books to read that were more at my level than were in the classroom at the time, and for some reason they were all about Helen Keller.. so I know a lot of random information about her to this day! It helped me embrace challenging myself as well as my curiosity, and because of that I still love reading – both fiction as well as nonfiction topics that I'm just curious about.

My 5th grade teacher and I clearly didn't get along. I remember quite well having most of my "sunny day" recesses taken away from me as a result. I don't recall being a really tough child, but apparently I was a handful for that teacher. It's not a great memory and I am now conscious of the way I discipline students for mild issues
