The main rhetorical appeal of this advert is LOGOS, and a bit of ETHOS. This advert is promoting a certain brand of toothpaste, and involves several dentists carrying out a survey - whether they would recommend this brand to their patients. To which, 4 out of 5 say yes. This encourages viewers to purchase this brand as data shows that this brand is recommended by most dentists.

The commercial shows that the fifth dentist did not recommend the brand of gum as he was attacked by a squirrel. They are insinuating that the dentist would have recommended the brand as well, if he was not assassinated by the squirrel. Only later do we realise that the video is about how sudden death can come, due to heart disease. The title "when you least expect it" further proves this. The viewer will be shocked by the quick turn of the events and wonder whether the turn was too abrupt. However, they will later realise that was part of the plan all along, that the message was that heart disease could abruptly stop a joyous moment. This would raise a lot more awareness and concern for heart disease.

Audiences that carry out such activities would become concerned as the advertisement points out that those substances are harmful.

When the advertisement brings up its product, it used words such as "dealing with all these problems" making the audience feel comfortable with this product. To further enhance this effect, the advertisement emphasises on the advanced protection the user would benefit from this device, including its long-term support as interpreted from the words "all-year".

The tone of the narrator is professional and calming, giving the audience a sense of comfort. The background music of the advertisement is also synchronised with the content of the advertisement, enhancing the audience's feelings.

They use appropriate, clear and direct words, which are 'decent' and show the ethics of the product. It does not use facts so its appeal is not logos, and it does not invoke feelings thus is not pathos. Therefore The main appeal of the advertisement is ethos.
