I would usually just look up the direct answer onto Google without thinking or analyzing the poem/story myself. Normally when we look up answers or ideas in Google, we tend to not use our brain to actually think over the information, but in this activity, we were encouraged to first think for ourselves, and then deepen our understandings by reading the analysis or paraphrase. This helps us better understand the ideas instead of mindlessly copying down answers.

It really depends on what I'm trying to accomplish. If I want the answer for something, I simply ask Google for the answer. For example, a character list, the authors biography information, any possible cultural influences, and the text itself. However, if I'm trying to understand the poem directly, I'm more likely to search for commentaries, summaries, or other peoples reviews on the content. Other people always think of things that I don't, because everyone has their own perspective. This is both similar and dissimilar to what we did in class today. It's similar in that the websites we went to were things that would come up in a search result for the original text, paraphrases of the text, or study material for the text. It's dissimilar in that some of information was less specific than what a Google search might give you.

This is somewhat similar to the process that occurs when I read literature. The main reason of looking up commentary afterwards rather than before is because I want to see how close to the commentary my ideas are/were. however, they pull out more information than i would ever be able to on my own. Commentary is helpful.

I don't normally use google to try to help me understand literature. That doesn't mean I can understand the literature myself though. Honestly I'm not sure what I do. Maybe I just read it, fail to understand it well, then be done with it. I probably do look up the name of it one google and read what it says about it, but not line by line paraphrases.

One of my goal this year that I added was to understand poems in depth and through this process, I think it was easier for me. Not googling about the poem is hard because we often want the easier way out but when you actually use your brain to think and check it later on you feel accomplished when you realize you were right about the idea. Also, if I was wrong, I am able to learn from the analysis and questions I got wrong on.

Googling something for my English class is extremely helpful. Some literature can be extremely dense or abstract to the point where I don't know where to begin analyzing or I don't have confidence in my understanding of the text. I found this exercise pretty similar in that it dumbs it down for me. However, I will also say that this exercise is different in the sense that it made me think more. Taking the quiz, for example, gave me questions to ponder on as well as understanding the answers to those question.

Then I would use their argument to refine my ideas and maybe criticize other viewpoints based of of my reasoning. It not very similar to how I use google due to the fact that I do not try to paraphrase a poem because sometimes there is more meaning that is loss when you break the structure of your poem.

This exercise was different than what I'd normally do in a Google search. Usually I will read a poem without really trying to understand it and I'll search for a summary/poem analysis if I have questions. But with today's poem, I had to analyze it first before looking at a line-by-line explanation. This allowed me to really think about the meaning of the poem and then check to see how close I was to the actual meaning explained in the commentary.

This is slightly similar as to how I use google with regards to literature. I can interpret the meaning of some passages without external sources. Other times, certain things like unfamiliar vocabulary or a confusing method of narration (e.g. the narrator is hallucinating) prevents me from understanding what fundamental events occurred. I usually use the internet to clarify unfamiliar words and figure out what happened specifically. With a more clear picture in mind I am usually able to figure out the intended meaning. However, there are many cases where I still struggle to derive implied meanings of significance. It is on these occasions where my research habits are almost identical to that this activity. I look online for detailed clarifications as to what the author is saying in small chunks. After I attain this assisted general understanding I am able to dive deeper and form my own conclusions.
