Hickok Kimberly.“Science Meets Art.” Stanford University.30 January 2019.news.stanford.edu/stories/2019/01/science-meets-art.

The Stanford Report follows both students and faculty from scientific departments and their casual hobbies to professional-grade works of art. This article shows several very experienced scientists, including a physics professor who uses his knowledge of science to enhance his wood-fired pottery works! With the use of thermodynamics, Hideo Mabuchi can predict and understand his craft, perhaps more than just a dedicated potter would. Physics and pottery, biology and photography, chemical engineering and watercolor painting are other examples. A student interviewed for this article was Vivian Wang, who studied electrical engineering among other subjects. She used digital printmaking in order to express intricate mathematical knowledge and concepts. She was able to show her bridges and ended up being accepted to an international conference that emphasized math within other disciplines! This event is called the Bridge conference and led to her acceptance into Cambridge!

These connections at such a high level of education and knowledge will be crucial to explaining or expanding upon my topic; science and art help each other advance whether at a hobbyist or professional level. I will be using this article to express that there should be more encouragement for freedom of creativity and applying these personal techniques/findings to various studies can amplify our advances as a collective. This topic isn’t one-sided! Scientists could simply involve themselves in art as an escape from what can be very intense courses, while artists could study sciences and math to increase detail and creative methods, from the rule of thirds in photography to the Fibonacci Sequence in painting.

Included is the impact of WW2 on economy, housing, families, and the birth of consumer culture. Some other key themes include the normalization of rebellion, music evolution, race and equality, and the general advancements of a newly booming society. It also recognizes the glorification of the 1950s, and shares the opposing events that reveal the American people of the ‘50s may not have been so happy. With fear of looming wars, racial tensions, stuffy nuclear familial roles, a lack of self-expression and questioning the means of a truly-free country, they didn’t seem to have it so easy. It is important I will reference this article because my paper will largely talk about the culture of the 1950s. It will be even more important that my information is correct since I will be looking at how the decade is viewed versus its reality.

Creating a space where critical and creative thinking can both thrive can be a balancing act in a lot of ways, but it is crucial in order to foster inspiring ideas and projects. Art, science, mathematics, engineering, and technology have influenced each other in ways that continue to advance the world around us. There are stark differences between these subjects and that leads many to believe that they are opposing processes, however this paper will explain and analyze the connections of practices and thinking that join these fields as well as provide some popular examples of scientists or inventors and their artistic works.

My topic is How has the fitness industry evolved over time. The main idea of this topic is that the fitness industry has changed drastically over that last centuries. I can support this by the research that i have done, it shows the many tactics people used to use when working out. Also new technology has changed everything including the fitness industry. The opposing viewpoint would be that it has always had the same origin like running and lifting weights. These ideas have always been here and will stay forever.

“History of Rap & Hip-Hop.” Timeline of African American Music, timeline.carnegiehall.org/genres/rap-hip-hop. Accessed 14 Mar. 2025. This article from Carnegie Hall provides an insightful overview of the evolution of rap and hip-hop music, emphasizing its origins, key artists, and cultural impact. It traces the genre’s roots in the Bronx during the 1970s, highlighting the pioneering roles of DJs like Kool Herc and Afrika Bambaataa, who laid the groundwork for what would become one of the most influential musical forms. The piece continues by exploring hip-hop's growth during the "Golden Era" in the 1980s and 1990s, with influential groups such as Public Enemy and Run-D.M.C., before addressing its mainstream success in the 2000s with figures like Kanye West and Eminem. The article also explores the socio-political and economic dimensions of the genre, making it a useful resource for understanding the cultural significance of rap and hip-hop. This article will be helpful for me because I’m talking about the history of rap and how it became such a popular genre of music in the United States.

Back in ancient times people had to hunt and kill for their food which they had to chase after a mammal and hunt them for food. So they never thought that they were exercising, people just thought they were getting food to survive. So the argument is that we as a society have just got lazy and now we think that an everyday thing for people back in time is now an activity that we have to do to stay fit.

It explains that many policies and interpretations of STEAM place the arts below STEM as a tool instead of an equal practice. This is an important point to recognize as sciences and the arts are equally as challenging, innovative, and technical. They benefit from each other greatly and neither one field or the other should be respected or represented above the others. The authors dive into more details including how different people approach and utilize STEAM. Some teachers or curriculums have only used a surface level of connection when relating these subjects.

Using this article would be a helpful tool to explain away any misconceptions that a reader may have when it comes to STEAM, as well as address the problems that can come from failure to balance importance. Further into the article there are more details about these misconceptions, broken approaches, and reasons for why we still use this guide to integration of the arts into STEM anyway. Bringing up these problems will help me enforce the connections and concept of how deeply rooted together all of these disciplines truly are and should be. Acknowledging a flawed system and providing examples of artists/scientists whose works and ideas will provide a better picture/perspective on when and how they made art in STEM into a historically important movement towards advancement. One example being M.C. Escher and his perspective drawings.

The above link talks about how baseball is dying and how people would rather watch faster-paced games like football. It also says that baseball is boring and there's very little action in a long 3-hour timeline. It also goes on to talk about how baseball doesn't have very good marketing so it's hard to get fans to watch. My counterargument that I will use in my essay would be that yes baseball is a lot longer and not as fast pace but when a player gets a big hit people will go crazier in the audience rather than you seeing a touchdown for the 12th time in a game. Many times in the author's document he talks about how its not the sport itself that is boring but later throughout he talks about how its boring and no one especially children can watch it so he goes against his claims many times throughout his argument.

Back then baseball was still evolving. Now we have better technology to help us improve back then they just played, I’m sure they still improved in things. Now a days we can go really in depth with the technology we have today.

One key argument of this source is the criticism of rap lyrics. More than half of the time the lyrics are very inappropriate and talks about violence, drugs, and other negative behaviors. Another key argument is the music as a whole. Some people may compare rap negatively to other genres, claiming that is lacks the depth or complexity of other genres like rock or country. This source will be useful for me because I can talk about how rap is not always loved and how many people hate it. I can make arguments against it on why it's a good genre and how it became so big.

Introduce STEAM and art integration in education

    1. Acknowledge opposition: failure of finding equal importance and abstract vs calculated

  C. THESIS: Creating a space where critical and creative thinking can both thrive can be a balancing act in a lot of ways, but it is crucial in order to foster inspiring ideas and projects.

II. Oppose opposition

    A. Abstract vs Calculated

        1. Counter with hobbyist interviews from Stanford “Art meets science” examples

         2. Restate argument opposition, summary.

   C. Answer: Artisry and STEM walk hand in hand with creativity and critical thinking. Even the abstract has a method of testing and being created while inventions and buildings come with blueprints. What are blueprints but a sketch of someone’s future 3D artistry? Through trial and error in nonlinear means, experimentation and creation dominate STEAM as a whole, these fields should be studied together with equal importance for beautiful, complex, and diverse advancements.

Take country for example and how half of the time it's a story that is inappropriate but sung differently and not many negative behaviors.

3) African American Traditions: I'm going to talk about how African American traditions started rap and how it influenced it.

4) The Bronx: I'm going to talk about how the Bronx had a huge impact on rap and how it grew and how it even started in the Bronx in the first place.

5) Global Force: I'm going to talk about how rap got so big not only in the US but globally.

Conclusion: Rap is one of the largest and greatest genres of music because of many different things.

Intro / backstory

The 1950s America is probably one of the most nostalgic and sought-after decades, leaving impressionable minds wondering why we can’t go back. But what is it that we love so much?

-

(If you were to think about the 1950s America, what would you imagine? Chances are, you’re imagining black and white grainy television, or rock and roll. Maybe even happy families and suburban neighborhoods for cheap prices. Perhaps the gender roles and formality. These are all common aesthetics that might define the decade for many people. )

Thesis

While it might seem tempting to look at the 1950s in awe or jealousy, most of what you believe about this seemingly exciting era is actually the direct result of propaganda.

Challenges / opposing views (mentioned briefly)

Conservatives glorify the 1950s by claiming it was an age of normality and prosperity.

Your first point

• These claims are false! There were still many families (mainly African American and other foreign people of different ethnic backgrounds) who suffered a great deal due to being unable to find jobs. Whenever they did, they would get stuck with a low pay and dirty work.

• “Normality” is used to describe an ideal society where everyone fits the expectations, meaning no radical ideas or breaking expectations. The reason why it feels like so many people today are suddenly being quirky or different is solely because there’s an understanding that it’s generally safer to be open about our identities than it was in the past. There have always been people defying the norm and pushing for change, literally all throughout history.

Counter point

Then why did people look so happy back then?

Your second point

• Because a majority of issues were covered up. TV shows purposefully only portrayed white middle class suburban families, and whenever black characters were featured it was usually always in a degrading way, portraying them as maids or doing dirty jobs. Other issues such as women feeling dissatisfied in their roles were never shown, and the queer community as a whole were completely ignored. This leads to an ignorant viewpoint, and many well-off American citizens didn’t realize the flaws of their decade, making it harder to push for change.

• Politics and what caused this conformity and strictness of freedom

Abraham Lincoln’s assassination and the result of unfinished civil rights laws

• How nostalgia effects our thinking

Conclusion

While it’s okay to enjoy the culture of an era or country, as do I quite frequently, it’s important to not be blinded by just the aesthetics. The feeling of nostalgia is also very powerful, we are so drawn to the good parts that we often fail to recognize the bad.

II. Oppose opposition

Clayton, Hannah.” Science and art: when opposites attract”. Medium. 07 October, 2024. medium.com/big-science-at-stfc/science-and-art-when-opposites-attract-60051f290542

The trouble with steam and why we use it anyway -build citation

There are a few problems with the current structure of how we express STEM and art connections that may contribute to students and the general public believing these subjects hold varying importance and value (Hurley et. al), dissecting this misconception and encouraging a change of direction for these organizations, such as STEAM, and other curriculums depends on full integration of the subjects. While the current STEAM programs do their best to encourage spaces that cultivate creativity within these very calculated and complex areas of study. By studying proportion or symmetry for art while allowing more creative activities in mathematics, sciences, and engineering is how we are able to further push our boundaries as a nation and beyond. Expanding a student’s mind and understanding of the relationship between art and STEM will begin a foundational conversation that might spark more depth of learning because of these integrative ways of teaching! Many items seen today are made by people in these fields who ended up using their knowledge in more creative ways, but it is understandable to assume that art is not as formulaic as these technical subjects (Clayton). From a far view outside of the arts sphere, many may see art as simply emotions or expression on paper or canvas, it all seems too abstract. However everything about these subjects walk through the state of trial and error using a basic understanding of materials and tools. For example, culinary arts is a field of artistry which has been described as chemistry! The craft of baking is a very technical process for many items; pastry, breads, and other culturally significant foods that depend on humidity, temperature, and other variables that can completely compromise a product. This is science and art coming together in a beautifully technical craft that shows individuality and calculated skill, neither art nor science outweighs each other.

Main Idea- Video games can have both positive and negative impacts on children’s cognitive development, such as improving problem-solving skills but also potentially shortening attention spans. Personally I believe with moderation video games can extremely helpful and very beneficial to the gamer themselves, although many people disagree.

Evidence- Many studies show that playing video games can improve visual spatial skills and decision-making speed in children. However, other studies suggest excessive gaming might be linked to attention problems and violence within schools. “Over half of teens who play video games say it has helped their problem-solving skills, but 41% also say it has hurt their sleep.”

Analysis- This evidence supports the idea that video games influence how children think and process information. On the one hand, they provide engaging ways to develop critical thinking skills. On the other hand with little to no moderation they may harm focus and concentration. this duality is important to consider when evaluating the overall impact of games on cognitive development. Studies have shown that teens who play video games have reported having stronger friendships, better communication skills, ability to work better with others and improvement to their mental health.

Link-https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2024/05/09/teens-and-video-games-today/

Founded in 1903, the Yankees have won a record 27 World Series championships, more than any other Major League Baseball team, with legendary players like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, and Derek Jeter contributing to their legacy. This consistent dominance over more than a century demonstrates the organization's commitment to excellence, strategic player development, and high standards of performance. As a result, the Yankees have become a symbol of tradition and achievement in American baseball, maintaining a powerful influence both on and off the field.

Rap was influenced by many different things in the United States, but it all started with African American traditions. Not only did African American culture influence rap with the blues and jazz, but also storytelling and poems. "The rhythmic storytelling style deeply ingrained in the Griot tradition has greatly influenced contemporary rappers’ techniques – showcasing their verbal dexterity and clever wordplay alongside captivating beats echoing age-old musical expressions" (TBone, 10). Storytelling is basically the core of music we listen to everyday. Behind the beats and clever wordplay, the words that they are rapping is a story that is meaningful. The storytelling process was carried over way before rap was even a thing and was a huge part of African American culture and traditions. Because of the storytelling the music means something and that's where it took off.

My whole thought process and reason why I want to write and talk about mobile window tinting is because of the underestimated thought that it gets. A lot of people take some hard working jobs for granted now and don't think about the hard work and dedication sometimes, even just the attention to detail. I'm really excited to point those out in my essay and not only explain the process but also inform and hopefully intrigue a lot of readers by the end of my essay. I have pointed out in many of my other writings that it doesn't take a smart person to tint, just a very dedicated and focused person. The hardest part about the tinting process is the long process. A person that can't bare to go through the harsh heat and the constant moving around for hours until the film is even on then they are not cut out for it. The process consist of very different attention to detail things. From cleaning the windows, to placing the film of tint down on the window the right way, to taking in the loads of heat and dirt your body takes, like I said it takes a lot of focus. I hope to cover all this in my essay and not leave any questions unanswered. The readers I'm sure will have a lot at first sight when they read the title and maybe even after the first paragraph. By the end though, I hope to cover all that.

Weightlifting has a rich and ancient history that reflects humanity's fantasy with strength and physical prowess. Evidence of weightlifting can be traced back to ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Greece, and China, where stone lifting was used both for training and as a test of strength. For example, in ancient Greece, lifting heavy stones was part of military training, and in China during the Zhou Dynasty, soldiers had to pass lifting tests to qualify for service. These early practices laid the foundation for the modern sport. This historical use of weightlifting not only demonstrates its importance in physical development but also shows how it has long been associated with discipline, honor, and societal roles. As weightlifting evolved, it became more formalized, eventually leading to the establishment of the sport as we know it today, with standardized rules and competitions such as the Olympic Games. The deep roots of weightlifting in ancient cultures highlight how the sport has been a meaningful and enduring expression of human strength throughout history.

This nostalgic view is particularly prevalent among certain conservative circles and has been popularized by movements like the “tradwife” trend that has plagued some social media such as TikTok. Tradwife, short for traditional wife, emphasizes the traditional gender roles of the ‘50s, and has primarily become an aesthetic that promotes the romanticized lifestyle of a loving stay at home mom. Most TikTok Tradwives encourage this lifestyle, making video content that show their passion for doing traditional chores such as baking or being a loving wife. (…) While on the outside these videos may seem fun and harmless, this booming trend has brought up a slew of controversy. Some onlookers claim this promotes an unrealistic lifestyle or harmful message, to which others respond asking what’s wrong with a women enjoying these traditional values. Many have argued that the issue isn’t with the fact that these women are allowed to enjoy these chores, but it’s with the fact that tradwives often downplay the effort it takes to maintain this lifestyle, leading to a romanticization of the ‘50s housewife just for an aesthetic. These Tradwives’ core values also tend to reinforce the idea that women’s roles prioritize domestic duties over personal or professional aspirations. This spoon feeds a carefully crafted image to impressionable young viewers. Many comments on these videos come from young women or girls who look up to these tradwives, seeing their glorified videos of a happy, loving, and obedient stay at home mom without fulling understanding the responsibilities and difficulties that come with. This is exactly how this nostalgia for the 1950s tends to spread, through a glorification of the past for people who don’t know any better.
