Money and sustainability, two faces of the same coin

Something "revolutionary" I learned on the way:

we vote with our wallets; choosing how and were we spend our money is a way to practice our freedoom of expression (I know, it sounds cynical but we live in a capitalist world, we gotta start somewhere) and find what little space of maneuver the system does not allow: a good example is the BDS movement. If we are the food we eat, we also are the things we buy.

spending more can be better than saving up; getting good quality shoes that can last longer and allow us to buy less later on and pollute less - even if more expensive. Often, socially sustainable products that value workers and do not exploit people are more expensive, but garantee better quality. The cost is worth is for us all.

buying second-hand, giving away and sharing; I find that point 3) combines 1) and 2). Putting all of these into practice will help us save up money in the long term - climate change is expensive, only rich people haven't noticed yet.

Money brings up the matter of ethics, something that is too often overlooked. These strategies are not commonly shared and clear for all - usually one needs to have a deep interest, for personal reasons or sensibility, to be truly invested and practice these actions.

Last but not least: banks and their investments. Picking a bank on the basis of ethics and sustainability is the greatest challenge yet. Our money finances their policies.

my country, Italy, presents a varied picture from an economic point of view. In the less developed areas, the level of remuneration is so low that it touches subsistence levels. Because of this, almost all the issues related to money are linked to how to deal with its scarcity, not how to use it proactively to improve one's condition in the long term.

Digital money is a future we cannot ignore. From this point of view, the correct circulation of information is an essential requirement for digital money, cryptocurrencies, combined with artificial intelligence, to fully unfold their potential. This premise necessarily implies a high level of media literacy applied to the finance sector. Conversely, new technologies would end up being useless or, even worse, a black hole that would end up swallowing everything.

We must be realistic. Young people and adults need a basic education on how savings, basic and low-risk investments work. In most cases, young people do not even feel the need to learn about money and finance. The few young people who do learn about finance, in most cases risk falling prey to misinformation.
