Edmund Rice, born in Callen, Ireland 1762, Child of Robert and Margret Rice, tenant farmers, Brother to six boys and two stepsisters, founded schools for poor boys. Due to laws called the Penal Laws that made it illegal for catholics to have a real education. Edmund received his education in an illegal hedge school, taught by itinerant teachers. Edmund received his religious education from his parents. When he was older he attended a commercial academy which was to set him up for his business career. 1779 was when Edmund started an apprentice with his uncle, Michael, who owned a merchant trading business in Waterford City which was the second busiest shipping port in the world, at the time. His business was extremely successful however in 1785 Micheal unfortunately died and the business was put into Edmunds name. In 1787 Edmund Married a woman named Mary Elliot, their marriage was shortened due to Mary, unfortunately, passing away in 1789, Mary at the time was carrying their child who was saved and was born with disabilities. This was a very tragic time for Edmund. After a period of reflection, Edmund sold his business and he was noticed about poor boys that were on the street, so in around 1800 he turned to his special vocation which was to help and provide dignity to the poor, by setting up Catholic schools for poor boys. Schools in today's era like St Patricks College, St Joseph's Nudgee College, St James College, & St Laurence's college, just to name a few are based on Edmund and his virtues, and with his Congregation of Christian brothers. Edmund passed away on 29th August 1844, Mount Sion, Waterford.

"Were we to know the merit and value of only going from one street to another for the life of God, we should prize it more than gold or silver"

The message behind what Edmund is saying is that helping or doing anything that supports someone in the name of God is better than any prize or possession. Rice is saying that gold and silver are treasured and praised items but supporting, helping and reaching out to anyone that's struggling is a better treasure and feeling than any piece of silver, gold or materialistic item. And to say that helping someone in God's ways is the same value as treasuring a prized possession. This writing was to Bryan Bogler in 1810. This message is relating back to Edmund Rice and how he started his school for poor boys, he did good for people in God's will and he knows that giving help is better than anything else.

One thing you can be sure of: that whilst you work for God, whether you succeed or not, he will amply reward you.
In this writing by Edmund Rice, the message is implying that no matter how hard you work, good or bad, God will always reward you. Saying that if you work hard in time a beneficial impact will come along and help you, but if you do something not good and put someone in a bad place then your reward will not be good, saying to never give up and always keep pushing yourself in the right direction and that in time everything will work out. This is relating back to how Edmund wanted to help poor boys after a tragic part in his life and he didn't give up and he kept his life and hope in God. This message was written for Convoking the 1829 Assembly.

wiritngs--http://edmundrice.net/edmund-rice/e-r-prayers/121-sayings-of-edmund

3. Prayers and Practises that nourished Edmund Rice

Edmund Rice's main practise would be praying and showing his devotion to the Lord. The period of losing his wife he prayed, he went to daily mass, praised the Lord and he prayed for those poor boys every day Prayers that Edmund used could have been to do with schooling and being thankful for the school the work in, to keep students safe and to bless the teachers.

For the first prayer, I have chosen an educational based prayer, seeing that Edmund started a Religious school for poor boys and that praying would have been a big part in Catholic education.

A Prayer for all Christians Working in Education

Lord of all things We thank You for the women and men You have called to work in education. Bless their hearts with Your love, joy and peace. Season their words with Your patient Religious, kindness and goodness. Fill their minds with Your faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. When they respond to a broken-hearted child Show them how to be big-hearted. When they reach out to a rebellious teen Remind them to be obedient to You. When they advise a lonely mature student Help them to be Christ Jesus to them. When they meet with an angry parent Let them see a child of God. When they give advice to a discouraged colleague Give them helpful and encouraging words. When they speak to visitors and strangers Grant them the gift of hospitality. Amen

For this prayer I have chosen one that represents being thankful and appreciate the things we have, knowing that Edmund would be praying and being thankful for the things he has or had. This prayer also has the meaning of asking God to help us realise that others are less fortunate and we need to help them and thanking God for what we did or had.

Dear Lord,

Thank You for this beautiful day. Thank You for our families and our marriages! We praise You, Lord! Among all that we have, there are so many hurting and needy people. We lift them up to You and ask that You would bless them, help them, heal them. May Your peace fill their hearts and may joy shine! We ask that You intercede for them, fulfilling their needs according to Your will. We also pray that You would use us to help them in any way we can. Open our eyes and make us aware of the opportunities we have to bless others in need. Help us to not be selfish, help us to share. All that we have is Yours and we surrender to You. May Your will be done in Jesus’ name Amen

The Rerum Novarum is an encyclical issued by Pope Leo XIII in 1891. It is a letter that was addressed to the bishops of the Catholic Church and is about social difficulties of the day, he discussed five different issues which were: private property, the right of the Church to speak on social issues, the role of the state, the worker’s right to a just wage, and the importance of worker associations. He also talks about the industrial revolution and how it helps mankind to ask questions about social issues, such as the relationship between employers and employees, the just distribution of wealth, the growing isolation of workers, the role of worker associations, and the decline in moral values. Pope Leo also informs the bishops of the bad and wrecked living conditions of the poor, he goes on to say that the
workers are left in unprotected dangerous areas, and that there a few factory owners that are becoming rich from the poor who work very hard labour and ger extremely low wage for the amount of hard working hours they do. He also states that political institutions have rejected religious teachings.
This relates back to Edmund Rice and what the Pope has said as the Industrial Revolution was a hard time for the poor people and young children, who had no money, worked in harsh conditions and at such young ages without any education and this may have inspired Edmund just like he helped the poor boys, even though this was before Edmund time, It shows the same virtues as Edmund, to help the poor and suffering.

6. The Preistly, Prophic & Kingly work of Jesus

Priestly Role- Edmund Rice would bring people together by Prayer. Edmunds story has said a lot about his devotion to praying to the Lord. "[The Brothers] begin and terminate the day's business with prayer; they frequently recall the attention of the children to the presence of God [hourly chiming clock]; they give catechetical instruction to the children in the Christian doctrine; they usually inculcate moral and religious truths in the reading class, if the lesson admits of it ... from this it is evident that religion is the leading principle nay, the very spirit which guides and directs their whole educational system." This quote is one that shows how he would pray with the Congregation of Christian Brothers and his students.

Prophetic Role- Edmund wrote a letter to Pope Pius VI to ask about founding an order to help poor boys and their education. Edmund was either the founder or at least a member of a group of men, like a modern-day St. Vincent de Paul Society who went around and cared for the poor and destitute in their homes. Edmund cared so much about these poor people and he wouldn't get much recognition. I believe Edmund would go talking to crowds and telling them about the unjust education and poor system and how it should be changed. Edmund rice made schools for poor boys who helped them to have an education and to have faith. Edmunds schools could have been a way to speak out as he was doing it to help people and nothing else. Edmund would go and talk to the poor and uneducated and tried to help them and just simply talk to them. In many different ways

Kingly Role-
Edmund throughout his lifetime did so much to help people surrounding him, Edmund used his power to promote the kingdom of God by starting up a night school for Catholic teachers, seeing that they did not receive a proper education, Edmund wanted to help people bring back their faith in God, After teaching in a stable for a while he went to teach a school called Mt Sictio helping others to teach even when Edmund wasn't really a proper teacher either he strived to help others and by 1810 Edmund who taught himself to teach could teach 150 students in one class. That is the Kingly Role by Edmund rice

Praying is not their main virtue but striving for a better future and helping the poor is.

Prophetic Role- This role is about speaking out and talking about issues, which the Smith Family does by having a website that provides information, television commercials to show how the children are affected and these make people realise what is happening and for them to help. 1992 was when the organisation started and only helping a small number of people and now having them be a known organisation to help poor and disadvantaged children, with people even being inspired to donate money or sponsor a child to help them have the best future they can.

Kingly Role- The Smith Family had used the kingly role in different ways to help and go out to physically provide children with the education and help they need. Their donations and sponsors have helped the children receive education and more. The Smith family offers a wide variety of educational; programs and courses. They provide for Preschool- Early Years, Primary School, Secondary Years and even Post School Years. They have a wide variety of courses like Litericaty Programs, Numeracy Programs, Technology Programs, Mentoring Programs, they also assist with Financial Issues, There are so many more things that the Smith Family can provide for anyone that's struggling. And in many ways, they have performed the Kingly Role.

Edmund Rice relates to this parable and shows that he could have used this as it explains that even in the worst of time in life to still pull through and continue, and not give up. The parable states that the beggar who had dreadful life passed and went to Heaven to see that God had rewarded him, and given him a better afterlife. This relates back to Edmund as a point of his life was extremely hard, losing his wife and his daughter being born with disabilities. Through this hard time Edmund still never gave up. He continued to help the poor children to have catholic educations and a hopeful future.
In the Parable the words "20 At his gate was a laid beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores." This is a good example to show how the words of Jesus would have helped Edmund and his brothers to create and better environment and world. Even though Edmund may have not come across the setting of this parable, Edmunds virtues to helping people, makes me believe that this would have inspired Edmund to go out and help others.
