In Ontario, Canada, in 1994, Leighton Hay was falsely imprisoned for the murder and sexual abuse of a 12-year-old girl. He was detained as a result of a faulty eyewitness identification and fabricated confessions coerced out of him by the police. Hay was found guilty despite the absence of tangible evidence connecting him to the crime, and he served over 12 years in jail until being freed in 2007.

Causes of Leighton Hay's incorrect conviction:
Eyewitness misidentification, false confessions, tunnel vision, and insufficient defense representation, according to Innocence Canada, all led to Hay's erroneous conviction. The fact that the one eyewitness misidentified Hay as the culprit shows how important the eyewitness error was. Hay gave false information as a result of being pushed into making false confessions during drawn-out police interrogations. Investigators' "tunnel vision" happened when they only looked at Hay as a suspect and ignored any other leads or pieces of information. Additionally, Hay's defense was poorly represented, which constrained his ability to mount a convincing defense.

Opinions about restitution for people who were wrongfully convicted:
I believe that those who were wrongfully convicted should receive recompense for the years of their life that were lost as a result. In addition to assisting in their recognition of the injustice they have experienced, compensation also helps in their reintegration back into society. It may be difficult to decide on an acceptable reward, which should take into account a number of things, including the duration of the person's incarceration, how it affected their life and the financial, emotional, and psychological hardships they experienced. Every instance is different, compensation should be individualized in order to offer substantive reparation.

Findings that were unexpected: It was unexpected to realize during the research how important false confessions and misidentification of eyewitnesses are in erroneous convictions. These elements can result in the conviction of innocent people, underscoring the demand for changes to the eyewitness identification process and questioning techniques.

Memorable aspects: According to this study, the tenacity and fortitude of people who have been wrongfully imprisoned, like Leighton Hay, is what people would remember the most. Despite the difficulties they encounter, they keep fighting for justice and work to start over after being cleared. Their experiences serve as a potent reminder of the shortcomings in the criminal justice system and the significance of ongoing initiatives to stop and reverse erroneous convictions.
