Question 1. The World Health Organisation defines well-being as “positive mental health is a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”

Do you think this definition captures well-being for students? What is contentious about it? What doesn’t fit with student life? What’s missing?

- 'Normal stresses of life' is very subjective
-Everybody deals with stresses differently e.g. some people can be unproductive if stressed however it can motivate others
- Individuals can have generally well but they can still have stresses. These stresses can effect them differently everyday
- In definition 'you are able to make contribution to community' but this isn't what we are doing as a student, we are working on ourselves first and it applies more in the future when have a job etc
-Focus a lot on work and not much talk about relationships and the social side of wellbeing. For example having your friends around you and a good support network can improve your wellbeing

How would you improve its applicability to students?
-Include the social aspect of wellbeing (E.g. having a good support system and knowing who to turn to if not feeling the best)

This is a validated measure of well-being for adult populations. Label these as predominantly relating to hedonic or eudiamonic well-being, and if they are primarily cognitive, emotional or behavioural (or interacting). Is this difficult? What aspects of feeling ‘well’ as a student is missing from this measure, in your opinion?

1 - Hedonic - emotion
2- Hedonic - emotion/cognitive
3- Hedonic - behavioural
4- Hedonic - emotion/cognitive/behavioural
5- Eudaimonic - cognitive/behavioural

What is missing from this measure?
- Not a balance between hedonic and eudaimonic - heavily weighted on hedonic
- Missing a social aspect - social side of well being for students important when away from normal social bubbles/family members

Question 3. The NHS have been publishing the following steps to well-being for many years.• Connect with other people • Be physically active• Learn new skills• Give to others• Pay attention to the present moment. In your opinion and experience, are these steps useful to protect or enhance student well-being? What do you think needs to be amended / added to these steps to make them acceptable and effective for student well-being (consider hedonic and eudiamonic components)?
