Brian Doyle in his short essay "Joyas Voladoras" (2004), asserts that all life has substance and meaning that is captured in the heart. Doyle reinforces his assertion by providing description of a hummingbirds life and what their heart goes through while also classifying other animals like a whale and a tortoise by their hearts, exemplify how much meaning the heart has in all lives. Doyle's purpose is to demonstrate that all different emotions will be held in a hearts lifetime in order to remind people that all moments of life are important and provide significance to ones heart. Doyle establishes a amiable, sentimental tone for an audience who may not realize their essence.

They have more mitochondria in their heart muscles—anything to gulp more oxygen." The use of anaphora emphasizes how a hummingbird's heart is similar to a human's suggesting that our hearts work in the same ways.
Asyndeton- "But when they rest they come close to death: on frigid nights, or when they are starving, they retreat into torpor, their metabolic rate slowing to a fifteenth of their normal sleep rate, their hearts sludging nearly to a halt, barely beating" The use of asyndeton provides how the hummingbird lives its life using their heart as it's an example connecting to the message on the value of the heart.

Metaphor- "Hummingbirds, like all flying birds but more so, have incredible enormous immense ferocious metabolisms. To drive those metabolisms they have race-car hearts" The use of metaphor represents the hummingbird having a heart that is very fast and distinctive. The metaphor of the heart provides detail of the hummingbirds heart and how it lives it's life to connect to the purpose.
Allusion- "the shatter of glass in the road" The use of allusion references a car crash connecting to the idea that many things can easily break such as the heart at any instant.
Simile- "The valves are as big as the swinging doors in a saloon" The simile of the size of a whale's valve emphasizes the idea that all living things are similar yet different.
