In the year 1700 the population of Virginia was 25,970 people and by the year 1770 the population rose up to 447,016. This was because after John Rolfe discovered the tobacco plant and how profitable it was Virginia made the switch from indentured servants to thousands of African slaves where they were taken and brought to the colonies. By the year 1710 enslaved Africans made up 25% of the population and in the year 1770 there was a total of 187,600 enslaved Africans. Virginia had the largest population amongst the 13 British colonies and declared its independence in 1776.
