The purpose of this lab is to determine if liver cells contain enzymes that will react with peroxide to create oxygen and water. Since peroxide is harmful to the body, all organs must have enzymes to break peroxide down into other materials.

1. Put water in one test tube as the control and peroxide in three others.
2. Place one liver sample in the water to establish that just the liver and water have no reaction.
3. Place the boiled liver sample into peroxide to show that the liver without enzymes won't react with peroxide.
4. Use a match in a test tube with only peroxide to show that peroxide on its own isn't flammable.
5. Place a liver sample in a test tube of peroxide. A reaction should occur and bubbles should form. Use matches to test if the bubbles are oxygen, if they are, the bubbles will be flammable.

1. Enzymes are proteins that act as catalysts for chemical reactions in organisms. Under the right circumstances, they speed up the reaction.
2. Since the reaction occurred in test tube 2, oxygen was given off and water was left behind.
3. The red hot wood produces a flame in test tube 4 because the oxygen given off in the reaction is flammable.
4. The increase in temperature in the boiled liver denatured the enzymes, rendering them useless
