Others told the UN Human Rights Office they had received death threats or sexually-charged comments in private messages or on social media.

Six months after the publication of "Defending the Philippines," protests erupted, Filipino legislators reacted, corporations were forced to respond and make internal policy changes, and many other things happened.

- This article details the inner workings of a death squad. It is based on investigations into 28 murders, 18 of which occurred in 2007 and 2008. Children as young as 14 are among the victims.

- Direct involvement of government officials and police officers in executions by the so-called Davao Death Squad has occurred at times (DDS). The majority of DDS members are either former communist New People's Army insurgents who surrendered to the government or young males who were death squad targets themselves and joined the organization to avoid being assassinated. Most people can earn significantly more money with the DDS than in other available jobs. Their handlers, known as amo (boss), are mainly police officers or former cops.

- The Philippine National Police's continuous failure to investigate alleged targeted assassinations is alarming. Witnesses to homicides told Human Rights Watch that police frequently arrive at the site long after the perpetrators have fled, even though the nearest police station is minutes away. Instead of collecting clear evidence such as expended shell casings or questioning witnesses or suspects, police frequently pressure victims' families to identify the culprits.
