Being a stage manager, it's incredibly important for me to understand what the common struggles leaders face are and how to combat that. However, I think that perhaps the most important skills is emotional intelligence. Working with actors and in a field that focuses so heavily on the emotional aspects of a project, it's incredibly important for me to understand, know, and adapt to different situations. I need to be able to recognize and help when my coworkers are struggling emotionally. In many circumstances, I've also had to make decisions on the fly, and keeping a level head is perhaps the most important aspect of these decisions. Making fast and rational decisions quickly is the name of game in theatre. Trust is another big one. Actors and Stage Managers are in the same union, so even though I am technically "the boss" in the rehearsal room, it's my job to look out for actors, especially when no one else will. That is how you earn respect and understanding as a Stage Manager.
