The idea of the Three Brains relates to poetry because different aspects relate to either the mammal brain or the new brain, but not the reptile brain. The new brain understands the spirituality and logic of poetry but aspects of the mammalian brain influence poetry because the poet is able to write from that brain on some subjects. The reptilian brain doesn't really have a voice in poetry but it can influence the writer.

When writing a good poem, or reading one for that matter all of our brains must be used to make the most of the poems. The reptile brain is used to input desperation into the poem, such as a rock climber who is afraid to fall. The mammal brain is used to convey emotion throughout the poem. The mammal brain is responsible for themes such as love and memories. Finally, the new brain is responsible for defining the philosophical aspects of the poem. This will help the reader and writer weave religious tones throughout the poem. All of our brains together are responsible for making poetry the best that it can be.
