Two of those students, Carol and Debbie, gifted me the items shown here: a spring of lavender from Carol's garden, and a keychain handmade by Debbie. The keychain and it's symbolism inspire me daily, with a message I hope to impart to my students, as well:
"The single knot on the top means: ”there's only one you, and you are strong and amazing". Once I saw the gorgeous view of the water down below, I realized that the trip to get there was so worth it! Sometimes, challenging yourself to take difficult roads that pull you out of your comfort zone can lead to the best destinations. “Unless you believe your students can learn, they will not.” (104) A teacher who believes in their student's abilities can make all the difference in that student's performance.

“Encourage students to set high yet realistic goals for themselves and then show them how to work in increments toward meeting their goal - letting each know that you are confident in the student’s ability to achieve.” (110) Lessons will be challenging, but scaffolded appropriately, and I will be the students' cheerleader at every step of the way.

“Knowing your students is at least as important as knowing subject matter content.” (111) I would say that it is definitely as important! Getting to know my students is one of the things I am looking forward to the most. There are many ways I can do this: by giving them a "getting to know you" form or survey at the start of the year, by noting the interests they express during class and incorporating those interests into my lessons when possible, and by attending extracurricular events as appropriate. One of my favorite high school teachers would give her students a weekly free write prompt with thoughtful questions designed to get to know them better, and she would return these filled with comments that showed how deeply she cared about what they had to say. By incorporating the Constitution and "democratic principles" (Kellough & Kellough, 107), this approach will be uniquely relevant to our subject matter. A judicious discipline approach also dovetails well with my philosophy of using history to teach effective citizenship.
