the dive

"So, during one of these training sessions, there was a dive into a very cold river. The goal was to retrieve a body from the bottom of the river in the shortest time possible. This was a common exercise in such expeditions. All 20 firefighters in training had already gone, so I went in relaxed, thinking it was safe to dive. I swam through the river and saw something shining. I went over, and as I got closer, I discovered it looked like a bomb. But there was a problem. The bomb had a clock set to 5 hours; however, the bigger issue was that the timer was counting down, meaning the bomb was going to explode in just over 5 hours. I came up quickly to alert the commander and check the situation. "Right afterward, they dived in to check (30 minutes had already passed). The divers tried to remove it but couldn't, as it was too heavy. They got out of the water and kept thinking about what to do.

(Time left on the bomb: 4 hours and 15 minutes).

The rescue

I then said to the commander:

“We need to issue an alert and evacuate everyone because we don’t know its reach, and there’s still a risk that the debris could affect the citizens.”

The commander replied:

“Then we have to act quickly, as 200,000 people used to live in this area.”

All the firefighters began to act in all directions. A great commotion was occurring, and many houses and animals had been abandoned. Families were separated, and some kept ignoring the warning; these had always been the most problematic ones. Grandpa was put in charge of them at the rear.

Then, he came across a group of homeless people standing there. He explained the whole situation, and the homeless started panicking. The firefighter was trying to help them escape as time was passing, but the biggest problem was that the firefighter only had one motorcycle. That meant he needed to hurry up a lot to help everyone before the bomb.

So Grandpa began taking each homeless person one by one to try to save them, as he had already checked the entire area and there wasn’t anyone left. The firefighter’s goal was to save everyone. He managed to take one at high speed, but 25 minutes had passed; meaning that if he could save the last one, it would be with very little time left.

The man tried his best, with only two in need remaining, but time was running out and there were only 25 minutes left. The firefighter didn’t know what to do, except to give the motorcycle to one of the homeless people, who knew how to drive and could take the other one who also needed help. And that’s exactly what he did. The firefighter just sat down and watched them leave, remembering everything he had done, and waiting for the moment of death.

Time was passing, and with only one minute left on the timer, he breathed and thanked God for all the adventures he had experienced. The minute ran out, and he found it strange because the bomb hadn’t exploded. Then he thought, “Could it have failed?”

Realizing this, he started jumping with joy and headed towards the rescue site. When he arrived there, he met with the other firefighters, and they all hugged each other, celebrating a mission completed with no losses.

Grandpa looked at his grandson and said:

"My grandson, there may not have been an explosion, but without a doubt, this was the closest I have ever been to death. So never underestimate anything, because all possibilities are possible."
