We were given a YouTube video to watch, before proceeding with our task to identify sustainability aspects in campus. HS Cafe in IIUM campus is one of the famous spots for students to hang out at.

Sustainable development aims to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. However, there are numerous challenges that hinder progress toward achieving true sustainability in various regions and sectors. These challenges can be grouped into economic, social, and environmental dimensions.

ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES

Air and Water Pollution: Industrial activities, urbanization, and agricultural practices have led to high levels of pollution, affecting both human health and natural ecosystems.

Plastic Waste: The proliferation of single use plastics and inadequate waste management systems result in pollution of oceans, landfills, and wildlife habitats.

SOCIAL CHALLENGES

Poverty: Despite global advancements, a significant portion of the world’s population still lives in poverty, lacking access to basic needs such as clean water, healthcare, and education.

ECONOMIC CHALLENGES

Consumerism: A global culture of overconsumption, driven by market incentives and advertising, leads to environmental degradation and the depletion of resources. The growing middle class, particularly in emerging economies, is contributing to increased demand for goods and services.

As students, we can address these challenges by spreading information through social media. Addressing these challenges requires global collaboration, innovative solutions, and long-term commitment to sustainability. It will require policy changes, technological advancements, inclusive growth, and strong leadership to overcome these barriers and work toward a future where sustainable development is achievable for all.
