Systems Thinking is an approach that views complex issues as parts of an interconnected and dynamic whole, rather than as isolated problems. It emphasizes understanding relationships, feedback loops, and interactions between the different components of a system to address sustainability challenges effectively.

BASIC CONCEPT OF SUSTAINABILITY

The basic concept of sustainability revolves around meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

THE 5P's OF SDG and its EXAMPLES

• People : Providing universal access to quality education and healthcare to improve human well-being.

• Planet : Promoting renewable energy and conservation of biodiversity to ensure environmental health.

• Prosperity : Encouraging green technologies and creating job opportunities to improve economic resilience.

• Peace : Strengthening legal frameworks to reduce corruption, violence, and discrimination.

• Partnership : Collaborating across borders, sectors, and industries to mobilize resources and share knowledge for sustainability.

ISLAM AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Islam and sustainable development share significant common ground, as the principles of environmental stewardship, social equity, and economic responsibility are deeply rooted in Islamic teachings.

KEY QURANIC PRINCIPLES ON ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

• Islam strongly condemns waste and overconsumption of resources.

"Eat and drink, but do not waste. Indeed, He does not like the wasteful." (Quran 7:31)

This Quranic ayat is implicating that resources should be used efficiently, avoiding excess and unnecessary waste.

• Planting Trees and Caring for Nature

Hadith (Saying of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him):
"If a Muslim plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, or a person, or an animal eats from it, it is regarded as a charitable gift (Sadaqah) for him."

This hadith implicates that environmental conservation and afforestation are encouraged as noble acts.

KEY QURANIC PRINCIPLES ON SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY

Social sustainability in Islam is deeply rooted in the Quranic teachings and emphasizes justice, equity, compassion, social responsibility, and community well-being. The Quran provides a comprehensive framework to create a harmonious society where the rights of individuals are protected, resources are shared fairly, and everyone has the opportunity to live with dignity and respect.

KEY QURANIC PRINCIPLES ON ECONOMICS SUSTAINABILITY

Economic sustainability in Islam emphasizes a balanced economic system rooted in justice (‘Adl), equity, social welfare, and responsible resource management. The Quran provides clear guidelines to ensure that wealth is distributed fairly, exploitation is avoided, and long-term economic stability is achieved for both individuals and societies.

Based on my personal observation, IIUM serves as a model institution for sustainable development, integrating Islamic principles with global SDG frameworks. Through education, research, and campus initiatives, IIUM demonstrates a strong commitment to building a sustainable, and equitable society in line with both Islamic values and global sustainability goals.

MAQASID SHARIAH AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

From our exploration in IIUM Gallery, we found that the logo in the picture attached aligns with the maqasid shariah of preservation of life. The slogan 'Leading The Way' delivers a very meaningful purpose. The slogan can be a reminder that we should lead and take full care of every living creatures as a part of our responsibility.

These are the summary of key international milestones in environmental and sustainable development initiatives.

These milestones demonstrate the evolving global commitment to handling the interconnected challenges of climate change, environmental degradation, poverty, inequality, and socioeconomic development. The international community continues to build frameworks that seek to ensure that development is inclusive, equitable, and sustainable for future generations.

THE SEJAHTERA CONCEPT

The Sejahtera concept is a Malaysian term that refers to a state of well-being, harmony, and prosperity in all aspects of life. Rooted in Islamic teachings and deeply influenced by local traditions, the concept emphasizes the interconnectedness of physical, mental, spiritual, and social well-being. It is a holistic approach that seeks to promote balance, peace, and sustainable development for individuals, communities, and the environment.

Sejahtera and Sustainable Development

The Sejahtera concept aligns with global efforts toward sustainable development, notably the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It incorporates:

• Environmental sustainability (SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 15: Life on Land).

• Social sustainability (SDG 10: Reduced Inequality, SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being).

• Economic sustainability (SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 1: No Poverty).

The idea of Sejahtera encourages practices that contribute to sustainable and inclusive development, ensuring that prosperity benefits present and future generations.

This weeks task really showed us how easy it is to make an area sustainable for many people.

Here are the key aspects we have found :

Recycling: Establish clear recycling systems for paper, plastic, glass, and aluminum, and encourage customers to participate.

Healthier Menu Options: Offer a range of healthy and dietary-conscious menu options, including plant-based, gluten-free, and low-sugar items to cater to diverse customer needs.

Accessibility: The cafe provides a ramp for people with disabilities, promoting inclusivity followed by equitable access.

Energy-Efficient Appliances: Use energy-efficient equipment like LED lighting, energy-saving coffee machines, and refrigerators to reduce electricity consumption.

ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES

Air and Water Pollution: Industrial activities, urbanization, and agricultural practices have led to high levels of pollution, affecting both human health and natural ecosystems.

Plastic Waste: The proliferation of single use plastics and inadequate waste management systems result in pollution of oceans, landfills, and wildlife habitats.

SOCIAL CHALLENGES

Poverty: Despite global advancements, a significant portion of the world’s population still lives in poverty, lacking access to basic needs such as clean water, healthcare, and education.

ECONOMIC CHALLENGES

Consumerism: A global culture of overconsumption, driven by market incentives and advertising, leads to environmental degradation and the depletion of resources. The growing middle class, particularly in emerging economies, is contributing to increased demand for goods and services.

As students, we can address these challenges by spreading information through social media. Addressing these challenges requires global collaboration, innovative solutions, and long-term commitment to sustainability. It will require policy changes, technological advancements, inclusive growth, and strong leadership to overcome these barriers and work toward a future where sustainable development is achievable for all.

SDG 16 = aims to promote peaceful, just, and inclusive societies by addressing the root causes of conflict and injustice, ensuring accountability, and strengthening institutions. The goal is to reduce violence, eliminate corruption, ensure access to justice, and build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels.

Examples of SDG 16 targets

1. Significantly reduce all forms of violence and related death rates everywhere.

2. End abuse, exploitation, trafficking, and all forms of violence against and torture of children.

3. Promote the rule of law at the national and international levels and ensure equal access to justice for all.

Importance of SDG 16

1. Peaceful Societies: Without peace, no society can thrive. Reducing violence and conflict is essential for the well-being of communities and nations.

2. Justice and Equality: A fair and just legal system ensures equality, supports human rights, and provides mechanisms for individuals to seek justice.

3. Institutional Strengthening: Strong institutions are crucial for addressing public needs, promoting transparency, preventing corruption, and ensuring long-term stability and progress.

SDG 17 : PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE GOALS

SDG 17 = focuses on strengthening global partnerships to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It emphasizes the need for cooperation among governments, the private sector, civil society, and individuals to create transformative partnerships that drive change and promote shared responsibility.

Examples of SDG 17 targets

1. Finance: Enhance international support for the implementation of sustainable development in developing countries, including through financial resources, technology transfer, capacity-building, and trade.

2. Technology: Promote the development, transfer, dissemination, and diffusion of environmentally sound technologies to developing countries.

3. Capacity Building: Enhance the capacity of developing countries to implement SDGs through various means, including education and training.

Importance of SDG 17

• Global Cooperation: Achieving the SDGs requires collaboration across borders, sectors, and cultures. No country can achieve sustainable development alone.

MSI is an initiative developed to measure and assess how well organizations in Malaysia adhere to Islamic principles in their operations, particularly in areas like finance, business practices, and governance. It incorporates the principles of Syariah (Islamic law) into sustainability metrics.

1. Environmental Indicators

   These indicators assess the impact of an organization or system on the natural environment.

2. Social Indicators

   These indicators focus on human development, social welfare, and equity, measuring the impact on people and communities.

3. Economic Indicators

   These indicators assess the financial and economic sustainability of an organization or system.
