She recounts that "Once, I was strapped to a table and cut with a knife. I got injections that made me throw up and have diarrhea. While ill in the hospital after an injection, guards came in to take the sick to be killed."
When Auschwitz was to be liberated, Mengele fled and successfully evaded capture until his death in Brazil where he was buried under a false name. 6 years later, his corpse was dug up and through DNA testing, the corpse was verified to be mengele.

He describes how his division had no idea what the concentration camp was at the time. The Soviets quickly realized the emaciated people contained within the barbed wire were prisoners, while the prisoners realized the soldiers where there to help them. Martynushkin recalls, "You could see happiness in their eyes" once they realized liberation was upon them.
