According to the text on page 19 it states, "Our house was a thatched one-room boc called a payag... It was built on short stilts to keep the heavy flood waters from reaching us. At night you could see the stars through the grass roof... if we lived in a cod climate, we would have frozen to death."

Because manny as a child was in no position to bargain he then proceeded to prove the fisherman that he was able to do the job. Because of Manny's determination he was able to persuade to fisherman to hire him. because of this "job" he was able to earn some of the fish he and the fisherman caught. According to the text, pages 25-26 it states, "After an hour or so of working the nets and piling the small fish into plastic buckets of water on the beach, the old man grabbed some of the fish we caught and threw them on the sand. He pointed to them and then to me. I took that to mean they were mine -my share for helping. The payment was even better than a few coins."

When Manny was around 9 or 10 he got into a fight. This was mostly do to the fact that Manny's family was extremely poor. Which meant that him and his brother usually got picked on and in this case it was his younger brother Bobby who was getting picked on in school. Funny thing was everyone was poor in the neighborhood but thats how poor Manny and his family was. According to the text, on page 27, it states," That first fight was not much of a fight, but it was still a rush. I forgot the name of the boy who tried to bully Bobby.I just recall the ring of boys who gathered to watch the fight. It was exciting. As the poor kid, I was considered the underprivileged, the weakling, and the underdog. I remember the boy ranted incessantly and would not stop teasing us about how we were poorer than dirt. he refused to shut up and occasionally looked to his friends like a proud prince... Perhaps I got tired of his mouth, or perhaps I instinctively sensed and opening. Regardless, it was at one of his cocky "look at me" moments that I threw a straight left jab... then all of a sudden, blood started gushing out of his mouth."

This event taught him to never give in to your immediate desires or self indulgence by him resisting eating all the things he had to sell. Though his family was doing better they were still poor. So poor in fact that when Manny was younger he didn't even know what a refrigerator was. According to Manny's book, on page 38, it says, "I remember walking through some of the neighborhoods and looking at the nice houses, wondering what they must be like inside. I wouldn't dare allow myself to imagine what it would be like to have my own bedroom in one of these places or eat three meals a day in a real kitchen. My friends said the people in those homes needed a big machine to keep it from spoiling."

In the year 1998 Manny went out of the country to participate in international fights. According to his book, on page 58, it states, "My next two matches represented the first time I would venture outside of the Philippines to fight. I fought my first bout outside outside my country on May 18, 1998, at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan, against a well-known man named Shin Terao... I won by Technical Knockout in the first round. Then on December, 14, 1998, I fought in what was at the time the biggest fight of my career. It was for the WBC World Flyweight belt. My opponent was a man named Chatchai Sasakul, from the Tonsuk College in Phutthamon-thon, Thailand. I won that fight by a knockout in the eighth round and won a world-title belt."

I was so dumbfounded by her beauty that I felt myself standing there far too long... Dinner with Jinkee was unforgettable. I had the opportunity to admire her beauty." Manny won this fight with a spectacular knockout proving to the world he is a great boxer. According to the book, on page 95-96, it states, "I had the fight exactly where I wanted it. Ricky thought he was winning, and I was sure he had already mentally changed his game plan and was now watching for my right hook with plans to counter it. Finally it was time. i remember thinking, come on, Ricky, watch for my right. I positioned my body so he would think I was going to throw a right- and crash! I nailed him with a flawless left hook on the side of his chin...The referee was next to him, counting...the fight was stopped by the referee. He never did get to ten... they called it the shot heard round the world.
