This can be seen from...Marjorie comes from a well to do family. We can see this from where Marjorie's driver drives Nabilah and the narrator to her house "We were all sitting in her fancy car, with fancy leather seats and a fancy musky smell." there was repetition in the word fancy telling us that all the things Marjorie owned were fancy, this shows that she comes from a rich family. We can also see that Marjorie is from a rich family as the place Marjorie lives in is a mansion. "Jo's house was a mansion" Nabilah said. This shows that she comes from a rich family as compared to Nabilah who lives in a HDB, Marjorie lives in a mansion.

Describe (1) Nabilah's neighbourhood, (2) Nabilah's home, (3) Nabilah's mother.

Nabilah probably comes from a middle-class family . This
can be seen from the line “we were on the fourth floor”. this lines shows she comes from a middle class family because usually the top floor of the hdb flats are the more expensive units and the floor closer to the ground are less expensive. thus we can say that nabilah comes form an average middle class family

i think that nabilah is very reluctant to be acquainted with marjorie. "nabilah maintained a stubborn silence" toward marjorie this show that nabilah was very uncooperative and she did not want Majorie to join her group and had to wait for the narrator to decide if she should or not . Nabilah did not want to agree into letting marjorie join. Nabilah said to marjorie "in an unfriendly manner , "Okay we can talk more tomorrow during recess. Bye"" this shows that nabilah was uncomfortable with talking to marjorie as she also did not introduce herself the word "bye" shows that the conversation was very abrupt and nabilah wanted to cut shot the conversation as did not continue to talk about the project and postponed the discussions about the project to the next day showing that she does not want to be around nabilah or get closer to her. in conclusion nabilah is very unenthusiastic about the thought of being friends with marjorie

Quote selectively.
Analyse tone and word choice.

I think that this short story is trying to say the social inequality happens in Singapore. Social inequality makes the poor or less fortunate feel inferior. This can be shown when Majorie said in the car that there were “other jobs that give you more money” than being a minister. This may have made Nabilah feel inferior and said in defences to Majorie, “Are you calling us poor?”. Majorie immediately retaliated without thinking about her words or the other girls feelings by saying, “Well I think it’s obvious that you’re not as rich as my dad”

towards the end of the story, nabilah became more comfortable and open to marjorie. Nabilahs mother said to marjorie "nabilah told me all about you" this shows that nabilah was close enough to marjorie in order to tell her mother all about her . Nabilah saw some kind of importance in marjorie as she could tell her mother about her. after marjorie said she was leaving for boarding school. Nabilah said to the narrator "why should we care about her if she doesn't care about us?" this shows that Nabilah treasured Marjorie enough to be angry about Marjories school transfer . the phrase "why should we care about her" shows that Nabilah was already willing to care about Marjorie in the first place. If nabilah didn't like marjorie or didnt care about her, she would not have been angry if marjorie were to leave or not. This shows that Nabilah cares about marjorie

Marjorie is rich, unaware and insensitive to other social classes, and is isolated and alone (from both discrimination and being too rich). She is a "katak di bawah tempurung" because she herself is oblivious to others around her. Due to being isolated and having no friends who are similar to her because 1. too rich and 2. changes schools, she is too direct and doesn't know the subtlety that comes when discussing financial status in Singapore, where everyone is treated equally regardless of race, language or religion (but what about social status?). She doesn't know where bathrooms are in HDB flats despite them being the most common Singapore buildings and has never had "Lemak Ayam" (a common dish) before because she has never made friends with people that aren't on the same level as her (Farquhar Girl's Sch). She focuses on extreme problems that take place in the world and how the poor are affected by it but we don't know why she does it and what she gains out of it. If she is able to sympathise with Syrian Refugees, why is she so nonchalant and cold to her classmates even before they made fun of her name. (She gave our protag the side-eye, belgh). That's why she is a mystery even to our protag. Because Marjorie is direct and also not at the same time. She says what she wants but her intentions are so carefully hidden in the story that makes us keep guessing and theorising.
