This is a major plot point as it provides conflicts for Scout and Jem. For example on page 85, we are informed that Atticus defends African Americans, although, in the book, they refer to them with a different word. Atticus then informs Scout not to use that word, and we see throughout the book that Atticus refrains from using that word, setting a good example for his kids. Like the article, Atticus speaks to Scout and Jem about what they did wrong and why it was wrong when they got in trouble instead of hitting them or screaming at them. Due to him doing this could be a big part of scouts empathetic character development.
