This story really makes you think twice about the wife's feelings. She seems to mourn at first and then she rejoices in her freedom. It could have been that her marriage was not going very well an she tried to hide it from the public. It reminds me that people can always have a facade to show one thing while hiding something else. I chose this picture because it symbolizes how the wife feels throughout this marriage. she would feel tied down and not able to be free. Also, after she learns of her husband's death, she looks out to the sky and whispers "free" to herself kind of similar to how a bird would respond to finally being free of their cage.

This story is about a mother lecturing her daughter on how to become and grow into proper and responsible adult. It is a one way conversation that shows the mother can be a bit overbearing an strict on specific upbringings. I chose this picture because the mother is thinking that what she is doing is correct and motherly. She probably does not notice that she is coming off a bit harsh to her daughter.

This story is about a murder case of a husband that was strangled to death. The wife seems to be oblivious to the murder during the night and also does not contact any officials. Some ladies join the sheriff and coroner to solve the murder. As they look around the house, the women find some evidence that could prove the wife was the murderer. They decided to keep the evidence a secret because they felt bad for the old, lonely wife. I chose this picture to show how the women hid some evidence from the sheriff to protect the wife from being blamed for the murder.

This story is about a woman facing depression. She starts to have an attachment to the yellow wallpaper in her bedroom that she hated. She believes there is a woman trapped behind the wallpaper and she can only be free by ripping off the wallpaper. The woman behind the wallpaper is a symbol of how the woman feels because of her depression and how she is trapped. She wishes to break free and believes she can accomplish that by ripping the wallpaper and freeing the trapped woman.

This story is a more detailed version of "Trifles" where we get a bit more insight and characterization of the wives. it emphasizes how the women stuck together to protect one of their own after seeing that she has been abused. They saw that what Mrs. Wright did was justified and they did not wish for her to face the consequences. It just goes to show that woman can still have an impact whether or not the times allowed.

This poem, written by Langston Hughes, is somewhat of a historical montage of the roles of the black man. "I've been a slave... I've been a worker... I've been a singer... I've been a victim." The poem starts and ends with the line "I am a Negro" is in present tense, contrasting from the past tense of the other lines. This can be seen as having pride of your race. It can also be interpreted as how history has forced the men to be certain people because of their race, but will never be able to change their pride and resilience to be themselves.

This poem illustrates the injustice present in America and how the author wishes for a better place. He repeats throughout the poem "It was never America to me". He goes on to explain that although America is the land of the free, it has never felt that way to many minorities and races. It is not the America that he knows. Also, this poem not only focuses on the struggles of the black race but also points out the struggles of others and that stood out to me.

He is willing to do whatever they ask. even when put in a humiliating situation, he complies in hopes of being a part of them and not seen for his race. This reminds me of the "popular group" at schools and how the new kid wishes to fit it and does everything the popular group wants them to do.

This story is about the jealousy between two sisters, Maggie and Dee. The main conflict in the story is about quilts that are important to the family heritage. Dee believes she should have them but her mother thinks otherwise and gives the quilts to Maggie. This reminds me of scene from a novel called "We Were Liars" by E. Lockhart. In this novel, the mother of three daughters passes away. The daughters then argue over who gets to own their mother's possessions. One of the items were her handmade quilts. The grandchildren get so annoyed over all the arguing that they decide to burn the quilts instead of all the arguing.
