Cross

The cross is an important symbol for the Catholic Faith. It serves as a constant reminder of the sacrifices Christ made on the cross. When individuals wear a cross on their neck, they identify themselves as sharing in Christ's sacrifice and following his lead. The cross also serves as a method of prayer. When we pray the sign of the cross, we call on the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The cross is a symbol for the three persons who make up our God, while reflecting on the sacrifices we make as Catholics

Fire

Back when the dinosaurs roamed the Earth and cavemen were the only people around, fire was a sign to gather. Fire for them was survival, a place to gather, and a point to remember to return home. For the early Christians, fire was a symbol of comfort when they were being persecuted. They would gather around the fire and share the Word of God. Fire is also the symbol of the Holy Spirit. At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came down and allowed the Apostles to go out and spread the Word in every known language. Fire is known as a universal way to meet and gather. Fire is a way to have a universal language saying "come and speak with us," just like how the Holy Spirit's fire allowed the 12 to spread the Word.

Celtic Knot

In Celtic mythology, knots symbolize sacred geometry. This means that it shows how all life in the universe is intertwined with each other. The Celts were not the first people to use a knot. A knot can be traced back to the Romans during the Byzantine Empire. Knots were often used for elaborate decoration or illumination of initial letters or for the hair of the apostles. Celtic Knots look likes strips which wind, weave and loop their way around each other. It can be just one strand which crosses back and forth on itself. Other times it is a number of strips. True Celtic knots have no beginning or end. For my family, it means there is no end to the love that we share, even after we die.

Yin and Yang

In Chinese culture, Yin and Yang is significant for demonstrating the two halves that make up a whole and the importance of each half to the other. When one half is taken from the other, the equilibrium of wholeness is destroyed. It is a sign of the duality of opposing sides. It is believed that each side is chasing after the other, seeking a new balance with the other. The circular shape reflects the unending flow of harmony of each side. Nothing is indefinitely yin or yang, they are interdependent upon each other. For example, day and night; you need day for it to become night and vice versa.

They are cultural symbols that we use to get our point across. We use an emoji to describe our mood or reaction in a situation. Sometimes we use an emoji to describe our mood even though we do not feel that way. It relates to faith because there are different symbols or colors used for different seasons and different parts of mass.

The Host and Chalice symbolize the body and blood of Christ. When we gather in mass, we are the body of Christ. As one unified body, Eucharist reminds us that we are part of something larger than ourselves. Christ's sacrifice also is present in the chalice of Eucharist. The blood of Christ reminds us of the sacrifice he made for our salvation.
