Travis asks Mama if he can head outside and she says yes. Beneatha answers the phone and tells a friend from school to come over and Mama asks who was it. Ruth comes back from the doctor and tells Beneatha and Mama that she's pregnant. Mama asks if it was planned or an accident and Ruth and Beneatha get into an argument. Afterwards there is a loud noise outside and Travis is seen chasing a rat and Mama yell's at him to get back inside. Travis comes inside and tells everybody about the rat he chased before being told to go back outside and not to chase any rats. Ruth is clenching her fists so she goes to lay down and relax. Shortly after Asagai shows up and gives a gift to Beneatha which results with them getting into argument and Mama comes to talk with Asagai before he leaves. Mama tells Travis to go ask the neighbor for some cleanser and shortly after the mailman shows up with the check. Travis goes down to get the mail and when he gets back Ruth is up and they beg Mama to open the envelope. Mama looks at the check with a face of unhappiness and Ruth tells Travis to go outside so she can talk with Mama. Walter comes back and starts asking if the check came and if he can have it for the liquor store resulting in an argument between himself, Mama, and Ruth. Mama gives Walter the rest of the money and tells him to put most of it for Beneatha's schooling aside and to keep the rest for himself. Ruth reminisce's about going to the movies with Walter last night. Walter walks in and puts a record on the record player and starts dancing with Ruth before a man shows up looking for Mama. The man comes in and introduce's himself as Karl Lindner and as a part of the Clybourne Park Improvement Association. Lindner offers to pay them for their house and believes that they will be happier around their own people. Walter refuses the offer and tells him to get out of his house. Mama and Travis arrive shortly after Lindner leaves. Walter, Ruth, Beneatha play with Mama telling her the "The Welcome Committee" can hardly wait too see her. Walter starts singing and gives Mama a new set of gardening tools and Travis gives her a gardening hat. Bobo arrives at the house and tells Walter that Willy never showed up at the train station and that he thinks Willy is gone with the money. Walter looks for the card Lindner left and leaves once he finds it. Mama comes out of her room and tells them to call and tell the movers not to come and then she starts talking to herself about how people told she always aimed too high in life. Walter comes back and tells everybody he called Lindner and plans to take the deal for them not to move out there for the money. Lindner arrives and Mama tells Travis to stay and watch what his father is going to do. Walter changes his mind and tells Lindner that he has too much pride and that his father earned that house brick by brick and they will not take his offer. The mover's show up and Beneatha reveals that Asagai asked her to marry him and move to Africa.
