Access and use of digital and computer resources is a privilege and it comes with user and provider rights and responsibilities. In an effort to provide parameters around the ethical use of computers, the Computer Ethics Institute developed the Ten Commandments of Computer Ethics.

This information wall will contain the Ten Commandments of Computer Ethics as well as the most common guidelines violated by students, why these violations occur, and ways to reduce or eliminate these unethical behaviors.

Students violate the 8th Ethical Commandment the most, which says, "Thou shalt not appropriate other people's intellectual output." For assignments such as essays, many students will google or search up answers or other's written responses online and take someone else's words as their own. Students might often engage in this behavior without giving proper credit to who's intellectual information they are using.

There are many reasons student decide to consciously plagiarize or sometimes even unknowingly plagiarize information they find online. One reason may be lack of understanding of material and laziness. a Student may feel as though they are rushed to do an assignment and rather than flesh out an answer on their own, they look up the information online and take someone's else's answers or perspectives to a question. There are other times when students may unknowingly plagiarize someone else's information. They may find a resource online and take the right steps of putting the words they find into their own words through paraphrasing, but they may lack understanding of how to give proper credit to the original author through in-text citations, work-cited pages, and bibliographies.

Another guideline which students are likely to violate often as well includes the 5th Commandment which says, "Thou shalt not use a computer to bear false witness." Students may find information on the internet that is false or propaganda and may repost this information, use this false information in writing assignments, or discuss this false information in lecture settings.

Education is the first essential step to ensure proper computer use! Students should educate themselves on what plagiarism is, the importance of information integrity, and the serious consequences of plagiarism. Students should review how to give proper citations when using direct quotes and words from someone else that they find online. Students should also learn of the importance of paraphrasing, because using someone else's words without understanding what they mean, even with proper credit is meaningless! Citations should enhance what you are writing or saying!

Students can also refrain from misinformation by making sure the sources they are using are credible websites. They can also fact check what they find online by making sure it is unbiased information that can be found on more than one source.
