The main idea of "Flags" was being different is not a bad thing. In this memoir, a young girl encountered a man who was an "uneducated racist". Her and her family are Chinese-Americans. A man yelled, "Hey! Hey you! If you're going to talk, talk English-". Her father replied furiously. They were all angered by the man yelling at them. The point of this memoir is saying fight back, and it is okay to be different.

in the short story "flags" by Jane J. there is a lot of imagery and similies in it, such as "the tinted window was halfway open in the back seat as i leaned back into the smooth, gray leather upholstery" thats one example of imagery. that is another imagery quotes. some other things that have to do with figurtive speech is similie, there is a few similies in this story such as "i absently noted the mud spattered on the car, it reminded me of a dried and dusty mustard" thats is onne similie in this story

The theme in the story "The Hill" by Naveen Y. is no matter how down you get on yourself someone else can always have an impact over you. I think this is the Theme because in the story when the author finishes the race last a senior named Dan went to him. Dan told him that he always use to finish last in freshmen year. After he said that the author realized that running wasn't about being slow or being fast but about the determination and courage.

In the short story Flags by Jane J. there is a lot of figurative language. For example, Jane J. wrote, "An American flag stuck out of the back of car like an ungainly tail..." (J. 1) This quote is a simile and shows figurative language because it is showing how the flag is like a awkward looking tail. Jane J. does a great job describing every detail in her memoir and this is only one piece of it.

In the short story that I read called "Flags by: Jane J" I realized there is a lot of different emotions through out the book. Some of the emotions were that the man character was saying how since she was Chinese somethings that will stay with her forever is, heightened awareness, consciousness of being different from others. I feel like at ties she may feel left out or not wanted for who she actually was.

"Should I stop and give up? was answered by my own quick response, Not an option. I have to keep going." This quote shows determination. It shows perseverance because Naveen is not giving up even though it hard for him to keep going. Another quote is "My time, the way I run, Ill never improve." This quote shows self doubt. I know this because Naveen is saying that he will never get better at running.

John is different because he is autistic and he comes up with his own words for different things for example when he says goodnight he says "goodnighta". His sister is trying to understand that it is ok that he's a little different and if people look at her family when there out at a restaurant its ok.
