In Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon, the motif of flight is explored many times throughout the novel. Flight is shown to be a source of freedom, a way to escape, and a outlet for expression and happiness. This freedom often comes at the expense of others

"Too much tail. All that jewelry weighs it down. Like vanity. Can't nobody fly with all that shit. Wanna fly, you gotta give up the shit that weighs you down." (Morrison, 179)

If "all that shit" is beauty, then according to Guitar, the peacock cannot fly because it is too beautiful. This contradicts the other examples given because beauty generally implies happiness and at least some degree of freedom. But in this example, one must remove all of that in order to become truly free.
