         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Function</strong><br>- to control food intake by controlling appetite<br><br><strong>Where it is produced</strong><br>Leptin is a hormone produced and secreted by cells in adipose tissues (these are the tissues that store lipids in your body). <br><br><strong>Target Organ</strong><br>Leptin receptors are found in the hypothalamus of the brain. Once leptin binds to these receptors, it causes appetite inhibition. <br><br>- When fat mass decreases, the level of leptin falls so that appetite is stimulated until body mass is recovered<br>- There is also a decrease in body temperature and energy expenditure is suppressed until you eat enough again.<br>- the opposite is true for when weight increases, leptin increases, and appetite is suppressed<br><br><strong>Disorders</strong><br>- ob/ob recessive alleles code for obese gene<br>- mice with this gene (and some humans) do not produce leptin and are found to have no appetite suppression and thus are more likely to be overweight<br><br><strong>Treatment Options</strong><br>- leptin injections worked for mice, but not for humans<br>- Unlike mice, obese people have very high leptin levels in their blood. This implies that receptor cells in the hypothalamus may no longer be sensitive and responsive to leptin, thus they do not induce appetite inhibition<br>-to treat obesity, further studies are required to understand the exact mechanisms by which leptin lowers body weight&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Thyroxin<br>- Is the main hormone that regulates your metabolism and body temperature it also&nbsp;</div><ul><li>increases metabolic rate</li><li>increases rates of protein synthesis</li><li>triggers growth</li></ul><div><br>-It is secreted in the thyroid gland. Targets all body cells. The general effect of thyroxine is to activate nuclear transcription (the process by which the information in a strand of DNA is copied into a new molecule of mRNA. &nbsp;<br>-when the body's metabolic rate increases, the rate of cellular respiration also increases producing a large amount of heat. Thus, elevated thyroxine production accounts for increased body temperature.&nbsp;<br><br>Disorder: Goitre&nbsp;<br>Occurs when there is a low amount of iodine in the body since the production of the hormone in the thyroid gland requires four atoms of iodine and the amino acid tyrosine.&nbsp;<br>Goitre can be treated by supplying the diet with iodine tablets.</div><div>Symptoms of thyroxine deficiency (low thyroxine concentration in the blood):</div><ul><li>Fatigue</li><li>Depression</li><li>Forgetfulness</li><li>Feeling cold</li><li>Constipation</li></ul>]]></description>
