This led to the downfall of the Soviet Union because he needed to now focus internally instead of externally like one upping the U.S. in the arms race, thus also leading to the end of the cold war.

This aided in the decline of the Soviet Union because by this point the Soviet no longer had the energy to enforce the wall and people just began breaking it and climbing over; soon demands of freedom spread everywhere.

Ignoring Reagan and his launch of a massive military buildup, Gorbachev did not engage in the arms race and furthermore announced that he would take his troops out from Afghanistan. On top of that he reduced the Soviet military presence in the Warsaw Pact nations of Eastern Europe. Him not intervening caused the USSR to decline, but his actions encouraged Eastern Euro Alliances to back out and soon revolutions started to break out all over Eastern Europe.

Perestroika had destroyed the “command economy” that had kept the Soviet state afloat. The only results he had of his policies were rationing and shortages. This cause many people to grow angry and frustrated with his government that uprisings and revolutions were the only answer, thus the dwindling of the Soviet Union.

This led to the decline of USSR because there was much resistance inside the country and mush outside of it as well. Many did not want to be ruled a by an individual that wanted to impose Russian ideologies on them.

Due to this the country was not able to survive because the very people that were the base of this method did not believe in it and nothing can flourish if the people doing it do not believe in it.

Giving people the ability to speak their mind also allows them to talk and share ideas meaning those opposing communism can come together not only discuss it but publicly spread their reasons why and creating an uprising from within, which would lead to the downfall of USSR.

However, contrary to his belief this was too freedom for the people and didn't proved the fast results he needed which would further decline USSR instead of helping it.

However, support transformed into an invasion by the time of the Soviet withdrawal from 1987-89, nothing concrete had been gained, and the USSR left damaged and humiliated bringing the downfall of the country to come even quicker and helping in stop the Cold War.
