My name is Indira, but I preferred being called Indi. I went to Burnside Primary School before coming to Glenunga. I am passionate about netball and cooking/baking. I've played netball since year two and have been in a range of teams including both school and club. I enjoy playing school soccer in the winter season with my friends for fun. I enjoy learning about the body's biology and health and am hoping to be a doctor (more specifically a cardiologist) in the future. Things that bring me joy include travelling and competitive sports. I have travelled to Indonesia four times, Italy once, Thailand once and many places within Australia.

Spaghetti and Marshmallow Tower     2-2-24

The aim of this marshmallow and spaghetti challenge is to make the tallest stricture using only the given materials; spaghetti, blue tack and a bit of sticky tape. The tricky part is that the marshmallow has to stay on the top of the tower at the end without falling. My group, Jasmine, Amaya and I had the intention to create a stable base using both broken and unbroken pieces of spaghetti and then just keep building up from there. What we didn't take into consideration is that the tower needed consistent support otherwise it would lean over, which it did. So even though out tower didn't fall it wasn't the tallest due to its leaning. Next time we would create more support and not try to go too high but instead more stable as that is what seemed to work for other groups.

Amaya and I were partners for this activity, the first letter of her surname is W and mine is L. For this, we had to come up with words using those letters, for W we had the words water-bottle, whale, watermelon and wheel, for L we had lion, lab, ladder and laundry. We decided to combine the words water-bottle and laundry to create a travel-size laundry machine, it's a large water-bottle which is a compactible mini washing machine for when on travel or for small loads of clothes.

Creating a Solution for Amaya's Dog Barking at Night Keeping Her Whole Family Awake 9-2-24

Over a few lessons, I gained information and a range of solution ideas to ensure Amaya's dog doesn't keep her whole family awake at night and that they all get a good sleep. My final solution was to not give the dog any attention except for giving her some food to keep her busy, the food isn't anything amazing like treats since we don't want to award her for barking but instead is normal food that has either been frozen or put into a food puzzle like the image above. This should keep the dog busy for a long time and then she will be ready to sleep.

This process would come after the divergent thinking to finalise and pick a final idea backed up with reasoning.

Something that I found interesting this week was the news about a hyperrealist and life-size dead whale on Glenelg beach. There was a lot of speculation about whether this whale was real, edited, AI or placed there. Turns out the whale was placed there by a crane at night in hopes of delivering a powerful statement about the environment and climate change as a part of Adelaide Festival. I find this to be an interesting approach to raising awareness abut this topic but definitely effective as it has caught the attention of the majority of people and news companys.

In this Wednesdays lesson we were in groups of three and were given three different catapult cards to use. The three cards were prompts for us to start thinking about a possible problem and a solution for it. One of the cards my groups was given had the starting question "what if your innovative idea involved creating a better version of a product you'd find in a kitchen or bathroom". This sparked the idea of band-aids and the pain and littering that comes along with it.

Coral is being destroyed, sea animals homes are being destroyed, making it harder for the ocean life to survive. This then also has an effect on other environments and species. With less fish in the area, the species with quickly decrease having an impact on many other animals diets which they rely on. This can then cause a decrease in other animals and a decrease of effectiveness in other ecosystems.

The design of this product is sort of like a tennis net but with smaller holes, the product goes from one side of the river to another and goes from the bottom to the top of the water. This ensures no rubbish gets through but water can easily flow through.

Another solution is by The Ocean Clean Up. This is a similar product to the Plastic Fischer but instead of staying in one place it moves to continuously collect rubbish. This product is also found in the ocean not rivers.

To go more into depth about a core contributor to ocean pollution I did some research which could also be an idea for innovation. I found that straws is the top contributor to ocean pollution. Plastic straws especially are the most commonly found rubbish in the ocean, it is said that over 1 billion straws are used each day and they take over 300 years to decompose. They not only harm the clean ocean but they affect the animals and habitats in the ocean. 1 million marine animals are killed each year because of our rubbish and their living spaces like corals are being infiltrated and destroyed by pollution.

After discussing and researching with my group (michelle, melody, amaya) we found that edible straws have already been invented. However, we discovered that the ingredients used could be improved with more user-friendly ingredients and we could also make them a social enterprise. Making it a social enterprise means that our business will help reduce ocean pollution and will also allow us to give money to organizations that clean the ocean so we can help fund them. Hopefully, the business we give money to will also promote our brand on things their website and products so then our edible straws will become more widely used then current edible straw businesses that are not really known about.

Scamper Possible Improvements On The Edible Straws 22-5-24

1. Substitute: Instead of using traditional edible materials like rice or wheat, consider using alternative sustainable ingredients like seaweed, which is abundant and grows rapidly without the need for freshwater or fertilizers.

2. Combine: Integrate the concept of edible straws with functional ingredients, such as adding vitamins or minerals to enhance nutritional value, or infusing flavors like mint or fruit to make them more enjoyable.

3. Adapt: Design the edible straws in various shapes and sizes to cater to different beverage types and consumer preferences. For instance, create thicker straws for milkshakes and thinner ones for cocktails.

4. Modify: Experiment with different textures and consistencies to improve the user experience. Perhaps create straws that become softer or more pliable over time, reducing the risk of them becoming soggy or breaking apart too quickly.

5. Put to another use: Explore additional uses for the edible straw material beyond just drinking. They could be repurposed as snack sticks, garnishes, or even compostable packaging materials.

6. Eliminate: Eliminate unnecessary additives or preservatives from the edible straw recipe to make them as natural and healthy as possible, aligning with consumer preferences for clean-label products.

7. Reverse: Instead of focusing solely on edible straws, consider creating a line of edible utensils (like spoons or forks) using similar sustainable materials, offering a holistic solution to single-use plastic waste in the food industry.

8. Extend: Partner with beverage companies or restaurants to offer branded edible straws, creating a unique selling point and driving consumer awareness of sustainable alternatives.

9. Magnify/Minify: Magnify the environmental benefits of the edible straws by highlighting their carbon footprint reduction compared to traditional plastic alternatives. Alternatively, minify the size of the straws for convenience, making them easily portable and suitable for on-the-go consumption.

10. Put to other uses: Consider using the byproducts of edible straw production for other sustainable purposes, such as animal feed or biofuel production, ensuring minimal waste throughout the manufacturing process.

The Ocean Cleanup is a nonprofit organization founded by Boyan Slat in 2013 with the mission of developing advanced technologies to rid the world's oceans of plastic pollution. Here are some key statistics and information about The Ocean Cleanup: Technology: The organization developed a passive cleanup system known as "System 001" or "Wilson," which is a floating barrier designed to concentrate and capture plastic debris using ocean currents. Deployment: The first prototype was deployed in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in September 2018. Scale: The Ocean Cleanup plans to deploy a fleet of cleanup systems to tackle plastic pollution in the ocean's gyres (large systems of circulating ocean currents), starting with the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Impact Goals: The organization aims to reduce the amount of plastic debris in the ocean, prevent it from breaking down into microplastics, and raise awareness about the issue of marine pollution. Challenges: While the initiative has garnered significant attention and support, it also faces challenges such as technical feasibility, environmental impact assessment, and the sheer scale of ocean plastic pollution. Progress and Results: As of my last update, The Ocean Cleanup has continued testing and iterating its technology. They have shared updates on their website and through various media channels about their progress, challenges, and research findings. Research and Collaboration: The organization collaborates with scientists, engineers, and environmental experts to continuously improve their technology and approach to ocean cleanup. Public Engagement: The Ocean Cleanup engages the public through educational initiatives, outreach campaigns, and media coverage to raise awareness about ocean plastic pollution and inspire action.

BBC News;

A businessman from West Sussex has helped launched a fully recyclable paper crisp packet.

The British Snack Company's chief executive Tom Lock, from East Grinstead, says the paper crisp packet is the world’s first fully recyclable crisp packet.

He says the packaging uses an "innovative polymer" instead of conventional plastic,

Mr Lock said the packet was “something that consumers have been demanding for a long time”.

The packet, developed in partnership with Evopak, uses the polymer Hydropol, which was developed by Aquapk to be recycled, re-pulped and composted.

Hydropol is non-toxic and marine safe and will dissolve and biodegrade, Aquapak said .

Mr Lock said: “Brits consume more than 8bn packets of crisps each year, the majority of which are not recyclable and end up in landfill or incinerators – that’s a lot of waste and a huge environmental problem.

“We have created the first fully recyclable crisp packet – something that consumers have been demanding for a long time.”

This relates to our product because...;

Our snackable sips are already making harmful and toxic things and making a 100% sustainable substitute. It will dissolve and biodegrade safely and quickly, not harmful to earth, animals, human. The use of plastic straws and plastic chip packets is a lot and they are big contributors to pollution but by making an eco-friendly substitute a lot of waste will be reduced. Both of the products have user information to back u the need and want for this substitute.

This innov8 experience has taught me a lot. Throughout the semester I participated in doing many brainstorming activities including SCAMPER, catapult cards and problem solving situations. My skills in problem solving and product creation thinking has changed and improved throughout the action project course. I am now more confident in my skills in identifying problems and exploring a range of multiple solutions. I have also learnt how to brainstorm more effectively. At the start of the semester my method of problem solving included identifying a problem then going forward with the first solution I could think of. I now know that a more effective way to approach a situation like this is to use a combination of both divergent and convergent thinking. This technique allows for a broader range of thinking that covers all bases of ideas. I have seen a positive difference in my final outcome when using this technique as my quality of ideas has increased. My abilities in understanding and using user information has also improved, in the innov8 process my group made a survey that was completed by about 60 people. The information we gathered from this survey enabled my group to identify main issues easier and also allowed for more effective solutions to be created with backed up statistics. My collaboration skills definitely improved throughout the semester, at the start of the year I wasn’t really close fiends with anyone in the class, however this enabled me to go out of my comfort zone and try to make connections with new people. I am now very close with my group members as well as other classmates and have successfully developed skills in collaboration. The tasks I participated also allowed me to develop a range of other skills while being collaborative, majority of the tasks we did was with one or more other people and learning from them and bouncing off each other for the ideas and tasks helped with teamwork ad the overall subject itself. My creativity is one of the 5 C’s that I think developed the most in this subject. While we needed to have a lot of statistics, reasoning and data for our tasks, creativity came in hand when presenting our product. I developed my creativity when creating the posters, business cards, pamphlets and the slideshow presentation. A main focus our group had was making sure our product and presentation would stand out by being appealing and eye-catching, as effective as statistics and information is, inviting and pleasant features it what allows the audience to pick you apart from the others and make them more willing to listen and pay attention. A challenge I went through was preparing for the presentation, I felt quite nervous as public speaking is not something I have ever been fond of. To help me successfully get through this and do my best in the presentation, I made sure to practice a lot and use some techniques that I had learnt in LEAP about breathing and a few tricks to keep calm and cool without fidgeting. Throughout the semester my group did a lot of research about a range of problems, especially straws, this evidence of research can be seen throughout all my padlet. Overall, this action project course has taught me a lot about how to approach and take on problems and how to effectively brainstorm and create solutions. I have also learnt about the large variety of parts to think about when creating something new like the manufacturing costs and stakeholders and funding. By learning all these things I feel much more confident in my person, collaborative and presentation skills, especially as the padlet task that was continuous throughout the semester helped me reflect, note down and soak in the learning I was doing.
