In Rome’s early year, the state lives in fear of its more powerful neighbour, Carthage. Carthage is a city located at the point of Tunisia. Rome wanted to expand into the Mediterranean Sea trading zone which the Carthaginians were involved in. The Carthaginians were considered good traders in the Mediterranean Sea. In 264 BC, the Romans and the Carthaginians had their first war. The Romans were successful and defeated the Carthaginians. With Carthage defeated the Romans became the most powerful in the Mediterranean Sea. Around AD 150, Rome controlled the greatest empire ever seen in Europe at that time. Rome was a huge portion of the land in this point of time. The languages spoken in Galilee and Judea during the first century include the Semitic Aramaic and Hebrew languages as well as Greek, with Aramaic being the predominant language. As the romans were in control of that society, they had the ability to construct and transport advanced items. They were able to source and build roads and transportation routes to using for trading. Some of the different ethnic or cultural groups living in the regions comprise of Greek & Hebrew and Jews. A main region that Paul encountered would be emphasis because he stayed over three years there to study. Also Paul travelled to Jerusalem to study Jewish Law under the famous rabbi Gamaliel. (Acts 22:3) Paul mostly started his journeys in Antioch so this is considered a main region in Paul’s time.

Saul despised the group of people who followed Jesus. He sought permission from the highest priest to bring any man that belonged to “the way” and kill them. On Saul’s journey to Damascus Saul got struck with a blinding light and he fell to the ground. Saul heard a voice which turned out to be Jesus speaking to him. After hearing Jesus speak to him Saul changed completely, he continued to travel to Damascus where he got baptised and changed his name to Paul to signify new beginnings. This was significant as it shows everyone that people can change and that Jesus always looks out for the people who are doing wrong and helps change them for the better.

Paul wrote multiple letters and for different reasons and in total Paul wrote 13 letters. Paul wrote within and eighteen-year period while he was on his missionary journeys. The first nine epistles were addressed to various churches in Greece and in Asia Minor. Whilst the last three were pastoral in nature and were addressed to church leaders. Paul’s personal letter to a Christian convert named Philemon contained the apostle’s request for his escaped servant to be reinstated in his mater’s household. His letters were later published in the bible.

Paul wanted equality for all Christians and he wrote about this subject in his epistles. In some of his verses, equality is implied, for example in Galatians 3:26-28. In other parts of his writing, the concept of equality is more clearly stated. Paul wanted the Christian masters to treat their slaves fairly. After all, the Christian master knew what it was like to be a bond-slave under the authority of their heavenly Master. They knew that God was both a merciful Master and a judge.

Elaborating from post 5, I believe that we can relate Paul’s letters about equality into our current society. Our civilisation has had multiple protests against equality. In Paul’s letters, he wrote about equality for Christians and in present time we have been fighting for equal marriage. This relates as both the fights are for the same reason of equal rights as Paul wanted equal rights for servants and our society wanted equal rights for gay marriage.
