Here is some information, aimed at novice stitchers or anyone who has no idea where to start.

The basics …

Cut a piece of fabric at least 22cm × 22cm. If you have a deeper frame you may require more to ensure you can wrap the sides and onto the back. The fabric should be cut ‘on the grain’, i.e., with the threads in the fabric in line with the edges. This will make it easier to wrap the fabric around the artist’s canvas. Woven fabric will be easier to handle than knitted (stretchy) fabric. Not too thin, not too thick. Colour and texture of your choice.

Find the centre of the fabric and create a square 14cm × 14cm (5½″ × 5½″) maximum in the middle of the fabric.

An easy way to do this is to use long stitches (that can later be removed) to mark off a square within which to put your design. This will be your working space and ensure that your design doesn’t flow off the edge!

At the exhibition these mini works may be hung very close together, so you must stay within the design space, with no bits hanging down or spreading sideways! (But you can have bits sticking out, forwards!) Your work doesn’t have to fill the space. You may have a perfect idea for something only 3cm across. As long as you mount it onto a 15cm (6″) canvas, that’s fine. Hand stitch, machine embroidery, added fabric, mixed media creations. Anything goes!

"A Family of Doilies About Families"

As suggested by Vicki, this will be a collaborative piece exploring family, memory and connection using lace doilies and family photographs.

The plan is for the doilies to have a transparent backing to give them some structure and allow them to hang together; without it, they would be too floppy. Any suggestions of how we might achieve this much appreciated. That’s collaboration!

A transparent backing would also mean that the lace patterns could still be seen.

With carefully positioned lighting, the lace would cast shadows, adding another layer to the ideas of memory, presence and absence, and the way family connections continue across generations.

How the 'family' element is added to the doily is entirely up to each of us. It could be a photo transferred, could be hand/machine stitched, could be painted with or without embellishment. The world is your doily!

A family of colours refers to colours grouped by a common characteristic, such as primary, secondary, or tertiary hues, or the broader categories of warm, cool, or neutral colours. Primary colours (red, yellow, blue) are the base hues, secondary colours (green, orange, purple) are made by mixing two primaries, and tertiary colours are a mix of a primary and a secondary colour. Warm colours (red, orange, yellow) evoke feelings of warmth, while cool colours (blue, green, purple) are reminiscent of water and nature, and neutral colours (black, white, grey, brown) provide a balance.
