An Unyielding Celebra/on of Life, Love, and the Power of Community

Breewayy celebrates the life, joy, and legacy of Breonna Taylor, honoring who she was beyond the tragedy of her death. Through vibrant colors, bold lettering, and playful imagery, the mural transforms grief into a message of hope, strength, and community.

Featuring Breonna's smile and the words “Wake. Pray. Slay!”, the design encourages us to celebrate life, stand up for justice, and uplift one another. More than a memorial, Breewayy is a reminder that remembrance can inspire positive change.

Inspired by the Grand Rapids Study Club’s motto, “Rowing, Not Drifting”. This mural rendering combines nature and portraiture to represent purpose, growth, and intentional movement. Throughout the connection between people and the natural world, this design reflects the power of moving forward with direction, community, and a shared vision.

In 1966, South High School student Cleo Cross took a stand by refusing to shave his mustache in protest of a school grooming rule. His decision led to his suspension and the denial of his official diploma on graduation. With the support of his mother, Lettie Ann Cross, Cleo’s stand sparked a 400-student walkout, bringing attention to racial discrimination and inspiring a larger fight for fairness. Nearly six decades later, he finally received the diploma he had long been denied.

Their story reminds us that one decision, one voice, and the courage to stand for what you believe in can create a lasting impact for generations to come.
