Dear Parents, Carers and Students,

As we come to the end of Term 1, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our parents and carers for your continued support. It has been a brilliant term on the whole, and we are incredibly proud of the positive attitudes, hard work and progress shown by our students.

It has been particularly pleasing to see that our reward points far outweigh our behaviour points, reflecting the many positive choices our students are making every day. So many students are engaging enthusiastically with their learning, demonstrating resilience and embracing our continued focus on oracy, developing their confidence to speak, listen, articulate their ideas and learn from one another.

Year 7 have made the best possible start to life at our school and have really impressed us with their enthusiasm, attitude and willingness to embrace new challenges. Years 8 and 9 have also been excellent role models for our younger students, demonstrating the positive behaviours and attitudes we want to see across our school community. We are very proud of the way our students are supporting one another and contributing to such a positive environment.

Our Year 11 Geography field trips went really well this week, and I would like to say a huge thank you to all the students involved for being amazing ambassadors for our school. Their positive attitudes, engagement and conduct helped make the trips such a success, and we are very proud of them.

Year 11 students can now begin submitting their applications to post-16 providers. We wish them the very best of luck as they take this important next step in planning for their futures. We are here to support students throughout the application process, both during coaching time and through appointments with our careers adviser, Mrs Rooney. It is imperative that students complete their applications as soon as possible so that, after half term, they can refocus fully on preparing for their upcoming mock examinations. Please encourage your child to make the most of the support available and to prioritise completing their applications promptly.

We are delighted that over 120 Year 10 students have already secured work experience placements. This is a fantastic achievement and an important step towards developing their understanding of the world of work and exploring future career opportunities. For those who have not yet secured a placement, we encourage them to work hard over the coming weeks to identify and confirm a suitable opportunity. Mrs Rooney is also supporting students with this process, and we urge everyone to take advantage of the guidance available to them.

We are also aware of the congestion in the local area caused by temporary roadworks, which may be affecting journeys to school in the morning. Please continue to allow sufficient time for your child to arrive at school punctually and, where possible, encourage them to use earlier buses to help minimise the impact of any delays. Thank you for your patience and support as we navigate these temporary disruptions together.

With three days remaining before the half-term break, it is very much business as usual at school. We expect all students to attend every day, arrive on time and continue to engage positively with their learning right up to the final day of term. We would appreciate parents and carers actively supporting this expectation by ensuring that holidays and other non-essential absences do not begin early. Maintaining excellent attendance is vital to ensuring that students make the most of every learning opportunity, and we want to finish the term as positively as we have started it.

We know that a strong partnership between home and school plays a vital role in helping our young people thrive, and we are grateful for the encouragement and support you provide. Thank you for working alongside us to reinforce our expectations, celebrate successes and help our students make the most of the opportunities available to them.

We look forward to building on the successes of this term and continuing to work together to ensure that every student feels supported, challenged and able to achieve their very best.

Thank you once again for being such an important part of our school community. We wish all our families a restful and enjoyable half-term break, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back for Term 2!

Best wishes,

Mrs May

Executive Headteacher

As a reminder, our phone lines open at 7.00am. We wish all our students and families a positive final few days of term.

Mrs Holden

In English, there has been some particularly impressive work during their study of Romeo and Juliet. Students have engaged thoughtfully with Shakespeare's characters, themes and language, and staff have been especially impressed by the quality of discussion and written analysis being produced in lessons. It is fantastic to see students developing the critical thinking and analytical skills that will serve them well throughout their GCSE studies.

This week's assembly focused on Black History Month, with the theme of Ambition at its heart. Students reflected on the achievements of influential individuals who have overcome barriers and demonstrated determination and resilience to achieve success. The assembly encouraged students to consider their own ambitions and the steps they can take to realise their potential.

We are also delighted to recognise Isla, who has been awarded Sports Person of the Term for Year 10. Thank you to parents and carers for your continued support in ensuring students attend school regularly and on time.

A huge congratulations to the following students who have exceeded 40 achievement points across this week and last week.

Henry R

Lily H

Chelsea D

Stella L

Well done to all four of you! Your chocolate rewards are on their way. Keep up the fantastic work!

Our top-performing coaching groups for attendance this week were 9RHA and 9NWE, both achieving over 97%. This is an excellent result and exactly the level of attendance we want to see across the year group. Well done to everyone involved!

Uniform Reminder

As the weather becomes colder, please ensure that students come to school wearing the correct uniform and bringing the appropriate items for the school day. We have recently seen an increase in students arriving without coats, blazers or the correct footwear.

We are reinforcing our uniform expectations, and I would appreciate your support in addressing any issues before we return after half term. It is important that we begin the new term with the right mindset, demonstrating pride in our appearance and respect for our school community.

Celebrating Success Across Year 9

There have been plenty of achievements to celebrate this week!

A huge congratulations to Lewis L, who received his award and trophy for Top Sporting Performer and Athlete of the Year. This recognises his outstanding sporting achievements during Year 8, including winning an incredible six medals at Sports Day. Lewis has demonstrated real commitment and talent, and we look forward to seeing him continue this success as a member of the school football team during Year 9. Well done, Lewis!

Another fantastic success goes to Autumn J, one of our newest students, who has been awarded Sports Person of the Month. Autumn has settled into the school community brilliantly and made a wonderful impression already. She was also a fantastic performer in our inter house netball competition during coaching time. It is great to see her embracing school life so positively. Congratulations, Autumn!

I would also like to congratulate our students who represented the school at the Eastbourne Schools Partnership cross-country event at Eastbourne Sports Park. Eighteen students from across the lower year groups competed against pupils from a range of local schools in some particularly wet and slippery conditions. Everyone represented the school brilliantly, showing determination, resilience and excellent sportsmanship.

A special mention goes to Evie B, who achieved an outstanding seventh place in her age category. Well done, Evie, and congratulations to all our runners for their fantastic efforts!

Reading for Pleasure in English

It has also been great to hear about the work taking place in English, where Year 9 students have been exploring a range of activities designed to promote reading for pleasure. During library lessons, students have been engaging with contemporary texts, exploring complex themes and developing thoughtful discussions around what they read.

These opportunities are a valuable way to broaden students’ perspectives, develop their understanding and encourage a lifelong love of reading. Well done to everyone involved!

Looking Ahead to Half Term

It has been another busy and successful week, and I am incredibly proud of the positive contributions so many students continue to make across the year group.

As always, if your child has achieved something particularly special outside of school, whether in sport, music, the arts or another activity, please do get in touch. We love hearing about their successes and celebrating their achievements with the wider Year 9 community.

Enjoy your weekend, and we look forward to seeing everyone for our shortened final week before the half-term

break.

Kind regards,

The Year 9 Team

We have been so impressed with their overall manners and the resilience shown throughout the transition period, please pass onto your child a huge well done from us all!

During the final few days of term next week, the Year 7s will have their chance to participate in the inter house netball competition where they can represent their coaching groups and houses. The other year groups have really enjoyed this challenge and so we hope Year 7 will throw themselves into this and enjoy it too!

A brilliant first fixture for Year 7 away at St Catherine’s this week. Willingdon played some fantastic football and were in control of the game with every player contributing to the performance. St Catherine’s equalised with a very good goal, but heads didn’t drop and the team applied more pressure and took a deserved 2-1 lead. As the game went on, Willingdon defended exceptionally well as a team and looked very dangerous every time they attacked the St Catherine’s defence. A third Willingdon goal sealed a well deserved 3-1 victory and sets them up for the remaining games in the Eastbourne Partnership A League. Thank you to all the parents and carers who came to support, it was a pleasure to take the team!

Keeping with the sporting theme, this week 18 students across all year groups went to the Eastbourne Sports Park in order to compete in the Eastbourne Partnership Cross Country involving all the local schools.

Parent Forum: Suicide Prevention Talk with Lauren Carvalho from Adam's Light – Monday, 9th November 2026, 6pm

We are delighted to welcome Lauren Carvalho from the charity Adam’s Light to our in-person Parent Forum on Monday, 9th November 2026 at 6pm.

We have invited Lauren to speak to parents as suicide is the leading cause of death among young people aged 5–35 (YoungMinds). What sets Lauren apart from many other suicide prevention speakers is her deeply personal perspective. She speaks as a mother who lost her 19-year-old son to suicide, bringing both compassion and authenticity to this vital subject.

Lauren’s talks focus on prevention, building resilience, and practical coping strategies, while encouraging a culture of openness, understanding and inclusion. She is also extensively trained in mental health and suicide prevention, combining professional expertise with lived experience.

For all of us who are parents, carers or who have young relatives or friends, this session aims to inform, increase understanding and empower us to help prevent suicide among young people. We strongly encourage parents to attend this important and supportive session.

Parent testimonials from Lauren’s talks at other schools:

‘Your presentation was just wonderful. It was real, touching and so informative and helpful. Ever since, I’ve been asking my daughter how she is feeling and talking with her much more. The work you are doing is lifesaving, thank you so much.’

‘I came along to your talk last week and just wanted to say thank you for providing parents with the opportunity to learn from your devastating lived experience. I'm so deeply sorry this happened to you and your family and my thoughts are with you. Obviously, it's a very difficult topic but I was very pleased to see the school taking the initiative and beginning to open up the conversations about suicide and what to look out for with your wonderful support’

‘Thank you very much for a very informative and moving talk. I am a parent of an autistic boy, who has verbalised about feeling depressed, and ending his life not long ago. I found your talk very useful and informative on how to manage the kind of situation I was faced with, moving forward in the future.

May you continue to help other parents prevent suicide of young children by arming them the knowledge that they need, just like you did that evening.’

‘I found your presentation really informative and we were both really engaged throughout. From your own experience and from a place of love you are able to bring teenage suicide, very much a subject that often people know little about and just don't think it would happen to them to the forefront. You give signs to look out for and the courage as a parent to have those forthright discussions with our children.

I thought that the subsequent personal journey you shared was also important and you conveyed that sense of loss with disbelief that you "never saw it coming". I think for most parents there is that fear that a young person will take their own life with no prior warning and that we as parents may have been negligent in our observations and could have done something to prevent it.’

Lauren is also coming in to speak with small groups of students over the coming months as part of our Year 10 RSHE programme.

If you wish to attend the Parent Forum on the 9th November, please confirm your attendance on the below google form.

Parent Forum - Adam's Light - Monday, 9th November 2026 at 6pm

Going to Highworth Grammar School in Kent was an amazing experience that allowed us to talk to the student leadership team and get advice and ideas from them. We spent the day at the school, starting with a tour of their facilities and spending time walking through the school and talking to the students about their experience in the sixth form.

We then had a session where we spoke with their student leadership team and were able to ask them questions about the responsibilities they have, what their advice for us would be, and how they approach their roles within the school.

Since our visit we have been able to take on the advice we got and consider how to implement it here at Willingdon, it was a very valuable experience and it was great to have the opportunity to explore the approach to student leadership in another school and hopefully take on some of the ideas we came across.

Head Student - Sophie Pocztarek 11PHI

Last week, all coaching groups were given the opportunity to take part in the MFL department's European Day of Languages song competition. Students and coaches have reported they really enjoyed the challenge and the scores were close at the top! We had two winners in the end, 10SKA for Wilmington house and 10CEW for Pevensey house! Well done to both groups! They all enjoyed a reward this week as a congratulations! Friston house had the highest number of participants across all year groups and so they have earnt a huge number of house points too!

Thank you also to everyone who donated to our harvest food drive! We will be using this to make up hampers from each house which will be donated next week to families in our community.
