「またね」 is a soft, friendly expression. It can be used by people of any gender, from children to adults.

「またな」 sounds more direct and has a slightly masculine, or sometimes “cool” or tough, feel to it. It is more commonly used by males, from boys to adult men.

We also talked about your son and his dream of becoming a train driver! 🚆 You told me that train drivers in New York can earn very good salaries. That was interesting to learn!

You also mentioned that some young people have been doing dangerous things, such as climbing onto the roofs of trains and riding on top of them. It must be very difficult for people who work at train stations to deal with these dangerous situations.

Another interesting topic was the difference between American English and British English. You mentioned that British English can sound more polite. I was also impressed to hear that you studied British English when you were young! It's always interesting to learn about the differences between languages and cultures.

We also talked about Japanese music! 🎵 You told me that you like Yu Takahashi's song 「明日はきっといい日になる」 (Ashita wa Kitto Ii Hi ni Naru). I've heard that song too! I really like its positive and encouraging lyrics.

We also learned how to ask about prices using いくら (ikura), meaning "how much."

We went through all the forms of い-adjectives: 〜くないです,〜かったです, 〜くなかったです, and the question forms 〜いですかand 〜かったですか.

We then looked at 〜たいです / 〜たくないです, and I showed that it changes in the same way as an い-adjective.

When we were reviewing the words "motemasu" and "mote-mote," I asked you if that Japanese boy in your class was popular. I couldn't stop laughing when you burst out laughing and said, "He’s not popular with girls at all!" Haha!

And what’s even funnier is that you, an American, are teaching Japanese—which you learned from me—to your Japanese classmate! That is such a hilarious story! But it makes sense... even if someone is Japanese, if they moved to the US at a young age, they can easily forget all their Japanese. Teaching others really helps reinforce your own knowledge, so go for it, "Sensei"! Do your best!

Today, we discussed how important it is to learn polite expressions, even for beginners. You’ll need to be especially careful when you first arrive in Japan and start attending school here. Understanding Japanese personal space and social distance is essential.

We also practiced polite ways to ask, "Who is that person?" and "How old are you?"

The most entertaining part was practicing the answers for "9 years old" and "20 years old"! Since you’ll be studying abroad in Japan soon, for the first time in my career as a Japanese teacher, I taught you the word "unko 💩" (poop) as a clear example of something "stinky" (kUSAI)—just to make sure you don't accidentally pronounce "9 years old" (kyuu-sai) as "stinky"! That had us both laughing out loud!

Also, since you are 20 years old now, we practiced the special expression "hatachi."

Using photos as clues, you practiced predicting how to read kanji that appeared in news headlines.

We also practiced figuring out which particles had been omitted in casual spoken Japanese by looking at dialogue from manga.

We started today's lesson by talking about October and its traditional Japanese name, 神無月（かんなづき）.

神無月 is often explained as "the month without gods." According to Japanese tradition, the gods from all over Japan gather in Izumo during October to hold a meeting. It's such an interesting part of Japanese culture!

We also talked about the Netflix drama 「ラムネモンキー」 (Ramune Monkey), which you've been watching. As you mentioned, Takashi Sorimachi (反町隆史) is really handsome! 😄 He's also a very famous and popular actor in Japan. Thank you for introducing me to another interesting Japanese drama! It sounds like something I'd enjoy watching too.

You also told me that you're going to be training a new employee at work. The new employee is only 23 years old, so I imagine teaching someone from a different generation can sometimes be challenging!

I was really impressed to hear that you've been working at the same company for 15 years! That's a wonderful achievement. And you're also a team leader! You must have gained so much knowledge and experience over the years, and I'm sure the new employee will have a lot to learn from you.

You jokingly described yourself as 「古い人」 (ふるいひと), but I don't think that's true at all! 😂

We also talked about an interesting Japanese vocabulary point:

古い（ふるい） — old (usually used for things)

For example:

古い くるま — an old car

古い ほん — an old book

When talking about an elderly person, we can use 年寄り（としより）, although this expression can sound rather direct depending on the situation.

Of course, having 15 years of work experience doesn't make you old! It just means you're experienced! 😊

Today we continued practicing the plain form. We started with the adjective つよいstrong and reviewed the four forms. You understand the four‑form rules for verbs very well. The four‑form rules for verbs and adjectives are basic and very important points in Japanese.

Your strongest qualities — かしこいsmart, あかるいcheerful, and ぎりがたいloyal — are all i‑adjectives. In our next lesson, we will practice using those words together with na‑adjectives and nouns.

In Chapter 1 of Volume 1 of Flying Witch, the name “Yokohama” appears in both kanji and katakana. We discussed the subtle differences in nuance between these two ways of writing the same word. Japanese has many expressions like this, so it might be interesting to pay attention to them as you continue learning!

In Japanese, we use います (imasu) for living things, such as people and animals, and あります (arimasu) for objects and other non-living things.

We practiced some fun examples together!
