Story by Bob Peel (Production & Sales):
"In the late 60s, Barry Howard and I were cameramen for a live show called Ladies Day. One of the sponsor products being given away was a tube of Pillsbury Doughboy raw dough. As a joke during the show, I took one of the raw dough pieces and stuck it right on Barry’s bald head. The studio audience roared laughing. Barry didn't laugh much, and I thought that was that.Well, when the day was over, I jumped into my hot rod to head home. Halfway down the station lane, I smelled something burning like baking bread. I pulled over, popped the hood, and found that Barry had gotten his revenge. He had snuck out and placed a raw piece of dough on every single one of my car's exhaust headers. It was burnt to an absolute crisp. I got the laugh on air, but Barry definitely got the final laugh!"(Left via the Memory Line on June 3, 2026)

Story by Bob Peel (Production & Sales):
"Around 1980, the station rebranded from CFPL to 'The New PL'. I decided to have some fun with it when I went to register my new vehicle tags. I managed to get a personalized Ontario plate that read: OLDPL.Not to be outdone, our late friend Don Godin went out to get his new plates shortly after. He keeping the rivalry alive by registering his new tags as: OLDRPL (Older PL). It wasn't a gut-busting moment, but it was a wonderfully cute piece of station camaraderie."(Left via the Memory Line on June 5, 2026)

Tim, computer work totalliy amazing! I don’t know if you were at the station when the above program aired. After the renovation, in front of the windows, at the upper lobby is where program aired. Yup. All happening in front of large glass windows. I can still can see cameraman trundling along the hall, from the studio to this upper lobby. I’m sure you can realize the upper lobby was just above the old one, at the front door. So it was a bit of a trek, having someone open doors, etc. To cover the bg of glass windows, Doug Assiz (sp?) in the Art Dept painted large, vertical panels. These operated horizontally (not vertically like normal). When show finished, not sure how it happened, but I got the panels. I thought they would brighten up the walls of one of the buildings at Wallacetown Fairgrounds. (Wallacetown is a “hoot n holler” from Dutton.) John and I were on the “farm”, so I must have gotten one of the neighbours and his truck to move these panels from TV to Wallacetown? Am sure Bob P or John M can give you their dimensions. They ain’t small. I took the attached photos of this artwork yesterday during the Wallacetown Fair. There’s crap placed at the bottom in front of them.

Bruce who hung them on the wall said, “They’re never coming down!” The last one is a steering wheel of a car. I thought they had a country theme. I’ll bring my IPad Tues and can show you what information should be cropped out. Or, possibly someone might have taken pictures of them when at the station. Yesterday was the first time I saw the “dedication” plaque.

Mary G

The CFPL memories have really been flowing this weekend, and it reminded me of a great "small world" story from up in Georgian Bay.

Years ago, my wife Wendy and I were up at the bay, and the Taleski's next-door neighbours, Glen (Robbie) Robitaille and his wife Hazel, were staying at the "Boatel" (which was only accessible by water). We took our boat over to meet them, and the great Hugh Bremner happened to be up there with them that year.

As we pulled up to the dock, a scruffy, unshaven guy on Summer holiday stepped up to help tie off our boat. We took a closer look, and the scruffy dockhand was none other than the Premier of Ontario, Bill Davis!

If I had a camera handy, I would have taken a picture - but this was long before we all carried phones in our pockets. Just a casual, undocumented run-in with the Premier!

It makes me wonder: Who was the biggest celebrity or politician you had a surprise run-in with?

Whether it was out in the field, in the studio, or on vacation, we want to hear about it! Drop your surprise celebrity encounters in the comments below, or call the CFPL-TV Oldtimers Memory Hotline at (519) 472-9354 and tell us the story for our book!

The "Hot All Over" Panic... (What was your biggest rookie mistake?)

John Mahoney and I have been trading emails, and he shared an absolutely legendary story from his time as a summer student photographer at the Free Press in 1956.

The Andrea Doria had just sunk, and it was a massive global news story. A panic alert went out to the photo department that a wire photo was coming in for the press run. John loaded the photo paper onto the drum, heard the beeps, and ran it to the developer tray.

Nothing. Blank paper. He said his body went "hot all over."

It turns out no one had told the young summer student that the wire photo machine had a "Send / Receive" switch... and the machine was left in "Send" mode! The editorial department was livid because they missed the photo for the press run. Luckily, his friend Harold Merton explained the situation to the boss and saved John's job!

We've all been there! What was your biggest rookie mistake? Did you ever hit the wrong button, miss a deadline, or accidentally delete something huge?

Share your "I thought I was going to be fired" moments in the comments below, or call the Memory Hotline at (519) 472-9354 to get it on the record for the book!

A poignant reminder from the late Don Godin...

As I've been going through Don Godin's archives for our upcoming Christmas slideshow and the Memory Book, I came across an entry from his old blog titled, "Losing Old Friends."

It struck a deep chord with me, especially with everything we've been talking about lately regarding preserving our history and keeping this CFPL family together.

I wanted to share Don's words with you all today:

"The sudden loss of an old friend not only leaves an empty hole in your life, but it also makes you realize that we are all getting older... Looking at the newspaper obituaries every day has become a full-time job for anyone over fifty, it seems and then, when you retire, it magically becomes a new job. We're looking, with dread, for names of people who we either knew quite well; friends whom we haven't talked to for many years; school mates who shared a happier, worry-free past... Yes, it's hard to lose family members or friends, but it's not hard to phone, email or write to those loved ones or old chums just to touch base. If you put it off and keep putting it off, someday it'll be too late, and then you'll wish you had acted when you had the chance."

Don was absolutely right. Let’s not put it off.

Take a few minutes today to reach out to an old colleague you haven't spoken to in a while. Give them a call, send an email, or tag them in the comments below just to say hello.

And as always, if you want to leave a memory of Don or any of our departed friends, the CFPL-TV Oldtimers Memory Hotline is open at (519) 472-9354.

Let's keep touching base, gang. See you at Shelly's next week
