I am Kyria Rebeca Finardi, leader of the EMITI research group and the first person in my family to earn a PhD. This path has taught me that what truly changes our lives is not the titles we hold or how fast we move, but the company and the direction we choose. I feel deeply grateful to dedicate my life to what ignites me most — research and education — and to do so in ways that allow me to cross borders, encounter extraordinary people, and keep learning in every direction. I love proverbs and there is one, from Africa, that says, “If you want to walk fast, walk alone; if you want to go far, walk together,” and in good company I want to walk far with this group:)

I am Gabriel Brito Amorim, co-leader of the EMITI research group with Kyria and just like her, I am the first person in my family to earn a PhD. I have been a language educator for almost 25 years (yes, I started very early!). I have taught English both in Brazil and in the United States. I earned my English Language and Literature undergraduate degree at UFES (Brazil) and my master's in TESOL at West Virginia University (USA), where I made many friends who made my journey in that country very special. For my doctorate in Linguistics, I went back to UFES and finished it in 2020, right before the pandemics hit Brazil. Currently, I am an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Foreign Languages at the College of Letters of the Federal University of Goiás (Brazil). I also have a number of leadership roles, which is an area of our profession that I enjoy a lot. I am the undergraduate coordinator of the French, English and Spanish majors, the Director of the Language Center and serve as the Associate Advisor for English at the Office of International Affairs at UFG. Apart from my academic and leadership roles, I like to travel, cook for my friends, write (fiction and non-fiction) and sleep a lot (my best quality!). I am a big fan of this group and love to see how we have grown throughout the years.

Since childhood, reading and games have been among my greatest interests, two passions that I have had the opportunity to bring together throughout my academic journey. This connection has sparked my interest in the educational potential of games and the integration of technology into teaching and learning processes. I am currently involved in an undergraduate research project under the supervision of Professor Raoni Schmitt Huapaya, PhD. As part of this project, we are adapting the game In the Shoes of Algoritm for educational purposes, drawing on the principles of media literacy education. At the same time, I am developing my undergraduate thesis under the supervision of Professor André Effgen Aguiar, PhD. My research focuses on the design and development of an original educational game aimed at fostering critical data literacy through the theoretical lens of digital colonialism. These experiences have played an important role in shaping my academic development and deepening my research interests at the intersection of education, games, and digital technologies. Looking ahead, I intend to further explore the design and development of educational games and their integration into teaching practices, with particular attention to their potential to create meaningful learning experiences.

Meu nome é Brenno Rocha Gonçalves da Silva e sou graduando em Letras – Português pelo Instituto Federal do Espírito Santo (Ifes).

My name is Barbara Cortat Simoneli, and I have built my academic journey continuously since entering adulthood. I began with a degree in English Language and Literature at UFES, followed by a Master’s degree and, currently, a PhD in Education, both at the Graduate Program in Education (PPGE/UFES). Along this journey, I also had the opportunity to undertake a technical-scientific internship and a doctoral exchange program in Valencia, Spain.

My research has explored different topics. During my undergraduate studies, from a decolonial perspective, I explored otherness and the role of the English language in a literary short story. In my Master’s research, I investigated English teacher education through Paulo Freire’s concepts of autonomy, authority, and authoritarianism. Now in my PhD, I return to Freire to investigate the development of global citizenship through virtual exchanges in which I have participated since my Master’s studies.

These experiences have brought me into contact with different cultures, including Turkish, Swiss, Spanish, and English cultures, further expanding my interest in internationalization, intercultural relations and in the different ways of understanding the world and others.

Although my academic background is mainly rooted in Education, I really enjoy natural science museums and, beyond academia, I see learning about different areas of knowledge and understanding social issues and struggles, particularly those that shape the Brazilian context, as part of my personal development and my journey toward becoming a more aware human being.

I have been working as an English teacher since 2005 and currently teach in public basic education for the city of Vitória (since 2010) and the Espírito Santo State Department of Education – SEDU (since 2016). I hold a degree in English Language and Literature from UFES (2009) and a Master’s degree in Education from the same institution (2016).

My doctoral research investigates the gaps between educational policies and teaching practices related to the use of Digital Information and Communication Technologies (DICTs) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in English language teaching in Brazilian public basic education, specifically within the context of the two schools where I teach, from the post-pandemic period to the present. The study is based on Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, Freire’s critical pedagogy, and Bakhtin’s dialogism, adopting a qualitative approach focused on the analysis and interpretation of data from documentary analysis and autoethnographic records.

Preliminary findings from the literature review indicate advances in the use of DICTs during and after the pandemic, while also reveal gaps in the training, structural, and policy conditions necessary for integrating these technologies into English language teaching and learning. In this regard, the study points to the need for educational policies and teacher education to incorporate training initiatives and methodological approaches that are aligned with the realities of schools, thereby fostering the effective and critical integration of DICTs and AI into English language teaching.

Meu nome é João Gabriel Alencar e sou doutorando em Educação pela Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES). I am an educator, teacher, researcher, writer, and cultural producer, currently pursuing a PhD in Education in the Graduate Program in Education at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (PPGE/UFES), in the research line Education and Languages. My academic background also includes a degree in Portuguese Language and Literature from the Federal Institute of Espírito Santo (IFES), postgraduate studies in Educational Computing, Educational Management, and Digital and Media Education, as well as a Professional Master’s degree in Humanities Teaching from IFES.

I work in Basic Education and teacher education, with experience in both municipal and state public education systems. Currently, I work as an educational coordinator in the state school system and at the Educational Technology Center of the Municipal Department of Education of Guarapari, where I develop and support projects related to educational technologies, digital culture, artificial intelligence, programming, robotics, and teacher professional development. Throughout my career, I have sought to connect academic research, pedagogical practice, technological innovation, and cultural production.

I am also a writer and cultural producer, especially interested in projects that bring together literature, education, accessibility, and different forms of language and expression. I am the author of children’s books such as “Como Assim Vó?” and “Pela Janela do Thierry”, developed in dialogue with accessibility resources, audiovisual production, and digital environments.

Outside my academic and professional activities, I am very interested in geek and maker culture. I love reading, playing games, especially RPGs, exploring digital games, creating stories, and prototyping ideas and objects. I enjoy experimenting with technologies, programming, robotics, artificial intelligence, and hands-on maker projects, often simply to discover what can be created from an idea. This curiosity for building, testing, playing, and creating is also closely connected to the way I approach education and research.

My doctoral research focuses on the formation of researchers mediated by agents based on Large Language Models (LLMs). I investigate how artificial intelligence agents can participate in different stages of academic and scientific work, considering not only their technical possibilities, but also issues of authorship, mediation, learning, and researcher development. The study adopts a Design and Development Research (DDR) perspective and includes documentary analysis and autoethnographic narratives, while also following the development and experimentation of an ecosystem of AI agents designed to support the research process.

_____________________________

I am Cesario Lopes Manuel Nunes Lino, a Mozambican researcher with a strong passion for African languages and cultures, particularly Bantu languages. I was born and raised in a context marked by Mozambique’s rich linguistic and cultural diversity. From an early age, I realized that, although they are part of the everyday lives of millions of people, many Mozambican languages still face discrimination and marginalization, especially within educational settings.

This concern shaped my academic journey. In 2012, while I was in my third year of Business Administration at ISCTAC, I decided to change my academic path and enrolled in the Bachelor’s Degree in Bantu Language Teaching at Eduardo Mondlane University. After completing my degree in 2015, I had the opportunity to work for the Ministry of Education of Mozambique as a Mozambican languages consultant and bilingual education specialist. In 2024, I completed my Master’s Degree in Education at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES), where I conducted research on Bantu languages and bilingual education in Mozambique. I am currently a PhD student in Education, developing a research project entitled “Decolonizing Languages and Minds, Reimagining Mozambique: An Autoethnographic Study of Multilingualism and Linguistic Justice in Education.”

My research emerges from my own personal and academic journey and seeks to understand how power relations and colonial legacies continue to shape the place of Mozambican languages in education. I seek to reflect on how we can build an educational system that recognizes multilingualism as a source of strength, values knowledge produced through different languages, and promotes greater linguistic justice. More than simply studying Bantu languages, I aim to contribute to their recognition as languages of knowledge, identity, memory, and social transformation.

🇬🇧

I’m Carlos Hildeblando, a Postdoctoral Fellow and Lecturer at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES). I hold a PhD in Education from UFES and a PhD in Global Education from Coventry University, UK, both completed through a cotutelle programme.

My research interests are mainly connected to the internationalisation of higher education, particularly Internationalisation at Home (IaH) and Internationalisation of the Curriculum (IoC). I am also interested in Virtual Exchange, Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), decolonial perspectives, and the concept of the Third Space.

Much of my current work explores how Virtual Exchange, digital technologies, and intercultural dialogue can contribute to more critical and decolonial approaches to English Language Teaching (ELT) and language teacher education. I am particularly interested in creating learning spaces where pre-service and in-service teachers can critically reflect on language, culture, identity, interculturality, and global citizenship.

In addition to being part of EMITI, I am also a member of EMEVEDI, where I have served as a co-convenor of the EMEVEDI ReN since 2025.
