Learning by Design: Preserving Disciplinary Knowledge Through Active Learning in AI-Rich Contexts

This study contributes to the growing conversation on AI in higher education by demonstrating how disciplinary knowledge and deep learning need not be diminished in AI-enabled environments. Rather than restricting AI use, the study highlights the role of active learning strategies and intentional learning design in creating environments that naturally encourage students to engage critically, apply disciplinary concepts, and develop their own understanding. By designing learning experiences that influence learner behaviour, educators can ensure that disciplinary knowledge remains central while leveraging the benefits of AI.

Humanising Assessment Through Reflective Practice: A Competency-Based Approach in First Year Law

This project examines two reflective practice innovations embedded within a competency based assessment framework in a first year introductory law subject at an Australian law school.

Together, these innovations reorient assessment away from ranking and sorting students toward supporting genuine learning and professional formation. Drawing on the first two years of implementation, this presentation reflects critically on both innovations, considering their capacity to humanise legal education and foster the reflective dispositions essential to ethical legal practice.
